Leafs 20-21 One trade

Created by: Trevorchef
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2020
Published: Jun. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Don't re-sign Clifford. Keep the 2nd round pick and let someone else overpay to get him.

If Robertson is in fact in the lineup, shelter him on the 3rd line with Kerfoot and Kapanen. Against lesser competition I bet that line would thrive.

Re-sign Dermott to a one year prove it contract. Still an RFA the following year.

I like Johnsson but, the trade was necessary because of cap reasons.

Deslauriers replaces Clifford on the 4th line. A high energy player who can forecheck and hit hard and not be a liability on the ice. Two years of control at a very reasonable AAV for a 4th line player.

Muzzin and Holl get shutdown minutes against the oppositions top line. Rielly and Dermott would make a great 2nd pair IMO.

I still don't think that this D is of championship quality but it beats the hell out of overpaying for a RHD that doesn't move the needle substantially just because he happens to be right handed.

I need to see a larger sample of Mikheyev and I don't know what Barabonov is yet in the NHL.

641K in cap space and a 23 man roster with three serviceable NHL spares.

Lets go!

This is really realistic, that trade is pretty good. Hope 3C can be better tho

well done. I think I'd rather have a #4-5 RD for Johnsson than a 4th liner, and then put Engvall on the 4th line

nah the defense is good enough. If we want an RD he should be a top 3 defenseman who would be good with Rielly. Trade johnsson for a better 3rd Centre

Not sure Johnsson gets you a "better" 3rd line centre. Think that's the issue. Kerfoot for my money was fine last year considering his linemates were in constant flux. Where I would normally agree that playing with different linemates is part of the game, just seemed that 3rd line was an ongoing experiment trying to recapture a Kadri-unit lile offense, which probably won't ever happen. The Leafs could certainly look for a cheaper option, just not sure it's a better option.

I really like that Johnsson deal frankly. Given the depth the Ducks have on the wings I am not sure they do it, but the offensive upgrade Johnsson represents they certainly consider it. Deslauriers is a great option on the 4th line. It's outside the box, which is 100% refreshing.

People really underrate Kerfoot's season last year. He had as many even strength points as Naz did for example even though Naz was a 2C. Kerfoot is also decent defensively and a low-key ****bag. He will be a fine 3C going forward.

Also that is criminally little return for Mango. No way the Leafs do that. Any Leaf fans who says this is a fair trade should be banned from the site for incompetence.

Don't knowif the Johnsson return is low. Consensus on CF feel that a 2nd maybe too much (team depending). A servicable 4th liner and a 3rd isn't bad at all. Could be better sure, but I don't see it as off base either. Deslauriers is great in his role.

Yeah, listening to CF's opinion on player evaluations is your first mistake. Listening to CF's opinion's on Leafs trade evaluations was your second mistake.
Mango can play on a 2nd line and is basically a discount Victor Arvidsson. Even at his low point right now (thanks mostly to his injury troubles this year I will remind) he easily gets a 2nd.
His real value is much higher though so I wouldn't move him until next year so he can recoup value, or for a team willing to pay full value (late 1st +).

Lmao! I don't listen to CF opinions that much. Most are out to lunch lol.

Yes, Mango can play 2nd line, but it has yet to be proven that he can on a full time basis. Given that a contract has to move, and the depth on the left side, Mango is likely to go, selling lo nor not.

Evaluating Johnsson is a balance of where he is (me), and where he maybe (you). Teams won't pay much more for potential in a 25 year old. That's just reality.

No reason Mango needs to go. Smart positioning can alleviate all but if someone needs to go there are other options. Plus Dubas tends to do well on trades (People try to retcon this fact but it is true) so I fully trust he will get good value. Certainly more than this site (who thought Nylander was worth a 2nd and Jensen) thinks.

Additionally, Mango played on Matthews wing all last year. He can hang full time.
It also isn't potential that a team would be paying for. He was hampered by injuries all year but he has already shown what he can do. All he needs is his health, not growth (not that I'd complain if he continued to grow).

Would live for him to stay. Just don't see that in the cards, despite how good the Dubas camp has been in managing cap and getting return on deals.

All I can say is that given Mango's body of work, I think you maybe over valuing him. I can see the Arvidsson comparision, but he has yet to reach that level - citing injuries that will hamper value a little too.

What I can say definitively is this: you see in Johnsson what I see in Kapanen. I don't see it as necessarily wrong. It's a function of gauging a messed up market because of a flat cap.

Only thing I'll say is I don't like giving a Dermott a 1 year deal then putting him on the first pairing. Don't think there will be much of a difference in AAV between a 1 or 3 year signing and if he kills it after 1 season playing top pair with Rielly he'll double what he makes

I think you mis-understand my valuation. Johnsson is Arvidsson lite; Arvidsson if he were a middle 6 player instead of a top 6 player.
Kapanen I value much higher.
