Skinner at 6.5 has a lot of value. There’s nothing coming to Buf that warrants giving up 7, while eating 2.5M for 7 more years. Pass

You can remove the probably...

Even with the retention. It'd cost Buffalo at least that 1st rounder just to get rid of Skinner...that's assuming nothing of value coming back.

Interesting idea, I'll give you that, but overall the idea of paying Skinner $2.5 mil a year off the cap to play for the Rangers and giving up a top-8 overall pick this year doesn't sound very enticing.

If you want Skinner and a good prospect for Strome & Georgiev's rights though... I'm listening.

Props for being the first person I've seen so far offering a trade to acquire Skinner though

Jeff Skinner was below replacement level this year... I'm not sure any team's going to touch Skinner even with a retention.... 7 years with year 1 already at replacement level? That's too risky. Okposo had more value than Skinner this season... Don't think anyone's going to take a chance on that unless you make an irresistible offer. I don't think this cuts it.

Skinner 2.5 retained and their first whats the offer fron the rangers. While Skinner was bad i think this type of trade works for both teams skinner has shown he can produce and a high first seems reasonable for 2 good pieces. I figured andersson and smith almost cancel eachother out

I think if you're daring enough to even think about acquiring Skinner, you're banking on last year being an outlier.

He scored 28, 37, 24, and 40 goals in the 4 previous years before last year. Avg that out and that's 32 goals/yr. That's a very strong yearly avg for 4 years & 280+ games worth of data.

Now I'm not saying I'm expecting him to avg 32 goals a yr for the rest of his career. But if he can avg 25 goals a year for lets say the next 4 of his 7 remaining contract years? I think most teams would pay around $6.5 mil for that production, that's the going rate for goal totals like that

Problem there is there isn’t two good pieces in the deal. Andersson can’t make the pros, Smith is barely an NHLer, gerogiev is an ok goalie prospect, and Strome had a career year with panerin (seeing his assists skyrocket, because he’s playing with one of the best players in the league. Skinner at 6.5 doesn’t have negative value, he had a 20 game slump. Trading 7 for all that is gross

no disrespect but BUF retaining any $ for 7 years is close to a non-starter. It's not good cap management to agree to burn $2.5 mil a year for the next 7 years. And the BUF 2020 1st is probably the most valuable piece in the OP.

Ok so lets look at it like this from both sides there is some hatred toward a trade like this so there has to be some common ground where this is the start and with a little tinkering a deal could get done. Btw with a new gm I think he would want to put his own spin on the franchise and top picks haven't done much( excluding eichel and dahlin) but past the like the 6th pick (cozens has not played yet) also pick is at 8th right now before the lottery. With their luck they will pick 8-10 cus we all know some how one of the other teams playing will get a top pick because why the hell not everything else is weird in this draft

There is no deal that would involve buffalo losing their top LW and their top 10 pick.
I don't care if people think skinner is over paid, hte talent can not be replaced from within and nobody is gonna trade someone of a similar skill set cause of the contract and that's fine.
Buffalo is no where in the same galaxy as a team that can afford to lose their top 10 pick to get rid of one of their guys in the top 6.

This trade is so outrageously bad for the sabres its wild.

Pick is currently 7. If it was 8 they’d still be playing. This is why stuff like this isn’t taken seriously. You don’t even know what pick your trading for. And yes, it’s only one pick. But if it was one pick the other way they make the expanded playoffs. Tell me what piece is even remotely good looking for Buffalo to pay skinner 2.5M to play for a different team and lose a top 7 pick in the process (could also be 1,2,3,8,9 or 10)

So a 7 oa in whats supposed to be a very good draft, and skinner at what he probably should have signed for, and we get- well we get nothing. Uhhh no.

That's why I said 4 out of the 7 remaining years... I'm already penciling in the final 3 as bad value, when he's 32-34 years old. He'll be 28-31 for the next 4 years. I don't see him losing his legs and falling off a cliff at age 30

Sabres ask you what you are smoking and would like to enquire on its acquisition.

Obviously Buffalo wants to give away Skinner with retention and our 1st for the honor to overpay Strome with whatever money we “saved”, a potentially ok goalie, a prospect that makes Mitts look like Kucherov and a cap dump. *click*

Yeah I mean it depends on how you adjust his outlook for the future based on this year. Just going by Dom Luszczyszyn's model, at this very moment Skinner is worth 5.25 mil... (https://theathletic.com/1653561/2020/03/09/2019-20-nhl-player-projected-gsva/ with 1 win = 3.27 mil and replacement level at 1.1mil for a F)
So already, Skinner is being paid 4 mil over his on-ice value...that figure is only going to get incrementally bigger with every passing year. So already it's a "bad" contract, but this has the potential to be really terrible in as you say 3-4 years.

tbh an early 1st rounder for losing that kind of value relative to cap is pretty modest.

Its not a good contract. it wasnt good when they signed it. that being said, the sabres arent hurting for cap room at he moment. They can easily bank on him coming back to his career norms after a down year. Theres a better chance you hit powerball than the sabres even contemplating this deal. strome sucks, georgiev sucks, andersson cant make the nhl, smith is another cap dump. nothing in that package equals skinner at 6.5m nevermind the 7th overall pick being included.
