Ok 2 things.
1) Buffalo management are Desperately looking to show eichle they can give him support and bringing in one of the nhls best playmakers to play with him does just that. While Bennett might not put tons of points up he is a heart and soul guy that is built for the playoffs.
2) No where has Gaudreau said that he would bail to his hometown in 2 years. Treliving has gone on record saying he would blow up the core if they didn’t step up this year. Do you actually think that Gaudreau in 2 years will leave an opportunity like playing with Eichel And dhalin for a Philly team that is aged out? Voracek and giroux are Not getting Younger. And the team is a bit of a mixed bag. Everyone acts like 2 years is like getting a guy at the deadline. It’s 2 whole years at an amazing contract. Anything can happen in that time
If you want to show Eichel support then you don't trade his best friend who just so happens to be a young cost-controlled 1st line winger.
What happens if in 2 years Gaudreau decides not to stay? If Eichel gives the GM 2 years to turn things around, do you think he's going to want to stay if Buffalo have no winger for him to play with beyond 2022, and no #2C (since they also traded Cozens)? That would be crazy for them to do.
They need to take a look at how Colorado have build their team:
1. Be patient.
2. Trade players who don't want to be there for good value.
3. Trade expiring contracts for futures.
4. Draft well.
5. Give your prospects the right conditions to succeed, whether it's in the AHL or in the NHL.
Buffalo already has a pretty solid full collection of pieces to build around, and a prudent GM should be able to clean up the mess and sign the right guys to fill out the rest of that lineup without needing to gut the future.
Skinner --- Eichel ---- Reinhardt
xxxxxx --- Cozens --- No.7 overall
