based off this year? I mean hard to argue that he isn't atop 5 winger the last 3 years..... I mean hes won the last 3 rockets. not the most important thing but scoring goals is arguably the hardest thing to do in the nhl. 50 goals/year is top 5 worthy

my big question is how does a winger play defense poorly? they are mainly responsible for the point man and maybe blocking shots but I assume that no one on this thread wants any of these guys blocking shots. a winger is a offense first position imo. the center normally is the first gy back defensive minded.... just my opinion about "bad defense" wingers... I guess clearing the zone? but Ovechkin defense has greatly improved since trotz

I mean, you can look at Stone. But that's one guy. It also depends how that winger plays in the d-zone when his team is stuck there. If he's a cone and useless, pretty obvious he is bad. If he stands on the lane, try to take pass options, wins puck battle, good to recover a loose puck and can exit properly, then he is probably good.

But that's why I, for one, prefer analytics when you wanna evaluate an F/D's defense. Too easy to say " that guy is good " based on eye test.

I remember when I played D I was never worried where my winger were in the D zone unless the point man was wide open. I agree with you I just think people like to use to narrative that players are " bad defensively". imo wingers are an offense first position but you have rare gems like Stone that go above an beyond but for the most part most elite wingers aren't great at defense

You know who is one of the top scorers among wingers? Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Granted when he plays on the wing he's playing with either the #1 or the #2 offensive center in the NHL, but his production on the wing has been amazing the past 2 years.

5v5 P/60, 2018-19 + 2019-20, over 1000 minutes TOI with McDavid or Draisaitl, Nuge scored 2.80 P/60. You know where that puts him? Here's a list of the top-10 wingers based on 5v5 P/60 over the past 2 years:

Kucherov: 3.21 P/60
Panarin: 3.02
Marchand: 2.83
* Nugent-Hopkins: 2.80 *
Kane: 2.72
Guentzel: 2.71
Pastrnak: 2.70
Tatar: 2.63
Kubalik: 2.59
Marner: 2.58

That's elite scoring. Plus he's very good at killing penalties and of course he's a powerplay witch.

Maybe he's found his niche.

For reference, this year Nugent-Hopkins spent about 56% of his 5v5 TOI as a winger, mostly for Draisaitl but some with McDavid too. Here is his "winger only" production lined up with all NHL players with 250+ minutes played:

Nugent-Hopkins: 3.51 P/60 (512 minutes)
Malkin: 3.43 (805)
Panarin: 3.28 (1079)
Yamamoto: 3.16 (418)
Marchand: 3.05 (906)
Kucherov: 3.01 (958)
Stamkos: 2.96 (769)
Pastrnak: 2.92 (985)
MacKinnon: 2.90 (1075)
Draisaitl: 2.89 (1163)
McDavid: 2.84 (1055)

That's incredible production over a fairly large sample size. I wouldn't be surprised to see him score 100 points over a full season with Draisaitl and Yamamoto.
