At the time, no. The cap was projected to go up significantly and he took less than his market value on a reasonable term as well. I wish the clause on the deal was a bit different, but it was a good signing at the time.

But the Leafs are already deep on the left side. Now they have no money to upgrade the right side. We are looking at Dermott as our #1 RD...

I'd argue he's their best Dman full stop.

Look, the main thing is that he played RD before, but many years ago. I'm sure that if he trains to do that this summer he can do it. Can't be worse than Ceci, can't be as slow as Ronald and can't be as bad at D as Barrie lol

Look, at defense, yes. At offense Rielly has the potential (if he's healthy I mean) to be in the 5 best offensive d-men

Not a chance in hell. He's not too old and is signed to a reasonable deal with good term and AAV. And he's without a doubt the best defensive Dman on the team, plus he's physical and can put up a few points too. He's the perfect Dman for this team, and don't forget he's a seasoned vet who's won a cup and made deep playoff runs.

I don't think he ever reaches the level he hit last year on a consistent basis. He's a very, very good offensive player, but he's a weak defender. I think Muzzin is a stronger player overall.

60 points in 63 games is guess is the start of a downward spiral, thats so bad, marner, matthews, nylander, are all so old too !!! not like they have even come close to their full potential or anything! youre right!

Leafs fans are so stupid. Tavares is an excellent individual player. There was no doubt about that. Adding another $11M to the payroll when you already have to pay Matthews, Marner, and Nylander. Extend guys like Reilly, Andersen, and Kadri AND add to the defense? Leafs are done.

He's not that bad a defender. Pretty average. Just way below the level of his offensive play.

He looks like a shutdown D man compared to Barrie.

Tavares wasn't the mistake it was the signing of Matthews and Marner. Both got 1.5M more than they should have.

If Marner took an offersheet at the contract that the Leafs paid him they would have gotten 4 1sts.

Tavares + 4 1st round picks + 1 1st round pick (from trading Marleau) > Marner

you have the chance to sign him you do it, hes one of those players, the mistake was not signing marner prior to his career year, not signing tavares, even then like i said before, they have guys like robertson, sandin, and liljegren who will be able to contribute on their ELC in the next 3 years, make a few other moves to shift things around, i am not saying they are going to win, but to say they are never going to win, when a good part of their core is u24 with solid prospects as well combined with the cap likely to rise( not this year) in coming years is just ignorant

If they sign Marner at 9Mx8 (the season prior) and Matthews at 12.5Mx8. Then nobody's complaining.

Reilly is not average, he's significantly below average defensively. His 5v5 shot rates actually look comparable to Nikita Zaitsev's this season.

I mean he was paired with Ceci and Barrie for most of the season and they aren't exactly defensive studs. I think you have to go back to the year before that when he was paired with Hainsey.

These charts don't take partners into account. Also if Reilly wasn't worse than both of those players this season.

I was kinda iffy on the signing back in February. Muzzin was the Leafs best Dman. He was signed pre Covid when the announced cap was to be about 86m. Now with flat cap, he wouldn't get 5.6m
I wouldn't worry about whether he is lefty or righty it's a question if he right for the Leafs for four years. And I wish folks would get off the obsession that only the Leafs need 3 or 4 NHL capable Dmen that shoot right.

The signing was fine. Muzzin provides leadership and guidance to the young members of our team along with a steady 2 way game. He can score and provide points when required or dish out a big defensive hit .He wanted to stay with us and we got to respect that.

And? Dermott could thrive next to Rielly. So could Lehtonen, what hand they shoot isn't nearly as big a deal as people think.

that and he was playing with an injury for most of the season. But overall he wasnt that bad. With all the rest he has had I fully expect him to come back to being the rielly we all know he can be. In general Rielly needs a defensive Partner. Someone like Savard, Manson, or even Lyubushkin could be candidates. Ea0BnwLXYAEGPaH?format=jpg&name=large
