Hopefully Cirelli or Barzal laugh. If not see if Chucky wants to come back on a reduced term.

Look, I know it makes us worse next year but hear me out. Staal likely has 1 year left with us (we really need to get younger). Why not try to flip him for Lias and Libor?

It opens up a gaping hole at a position the team is already weak at. They may need to extend Galch even with Staal and Galch isn't remotely a 1C. Staal can at least pass for one in stretches.

Which I get but Staal is getting old and FAST. Since he's not a long-term solution, I figured it'd be okay to use him to load up on prospects in which we are in dire need of (LD and C). Sure it opens up a new gap at Center but this move would be conditional upon additional moves if I was Billy G. The current team we have is not a contender and our core is young so I was sacrificing a player who can help us now for possibly 2 that can help us in the future as the core reaches its prime.

Staal buys Guerin time to address their need of a center. Ideally, they find a center that can split top 6 time with Ek while Staal gets 3C ice time so he doesn't burn out. That plus any upgrade at goalie (starting with an empty net...?) makes them a much better team. Staal still has value to them. If they extend Staal for 1 year with a full NMC after the expansion draft so he doesn't have to worry about the trade deadline, it gives them 2 more years to develop Khovanov in Iowa.

I’m with @mnwild1790 on this one. I’m sick and tired of the Wild always borrowing from tomorrow in order to have a mediocre to good team today. I am 100% in favor of any trade that aims at the sustainable and long-term health of the franchise. Moving Staal would be a great start.

In my opinion, Staal’s greatest value to the Wild would (and should) be trading him for younger and/or future assets.

That's fair. By the way, I was never claiming he had no value to them. I was merely trying to use his value to improve our future assets.

Your way works as well, and who knows, maybe I'm wrong and we're closer to contention than I think we are! A lot of that depends on the growth of Ek, Greenway, Fiala, and Kaprizov. Plus the rebound of Dumba.

I sure hope Khovanov is the real deal btw. He looks like it but that is just juniors.

I hope Khovanov is too. I also hope Ek turns out to be as good as Koivu, preferably both so Ek isn't forced to go it alone like Koivu for so long. lol

Elite 1C sniper Victor Rask, duh.

All joking aside my latest idiotic thought is to acquire two young centers. Cirelli is a great start, but maybe we also move Brodin for an offensive C like Domi or Strome (I don't love either of them, but I guess I don't hate them). Having a center core of Cirelli, Domi/Strome, and Ek sounds like a very good way to reshape this team when you add Fiala and Kaprizov into the mix.

I don't disagree, the issue is they have too many contracts that force them to try to be good right now. Suter, Parise, Zucc, and Spurgeon aren't going anywhere. If they're going to move Staal, it needs to be for a player almost ready to make a difference. They won't move Staal for pure futures, for reasons we both know.

Easy no from CGY, Gaudreau's worth a lot more than Strome Georgiev and a conditional 3rd

You mean Victor "Swedish Sniping Sensation" Rask. I agree. He'll be the hero we need. laugh laugh But I do like the 2 center approach for the offseason. But I also don't want to make any rash decisions just because we're in need of centers. I truly believe we are getting close to contention and I don't want to set us back just because of our desire to answer the biggest hole in our lineup.

I'm with @JayTea moving Staal is a bad idea. Old or not Staal fills a positional need and at a dirt cheap price. A 2nd and 2 maybe prospects + a cap dump is a TDL deal, not a before the season deal.

Trade Staal before the season and with average goaltending MN will be on the Playoff fringe, so the at the TDL they'll go out and pay the same price (or more) to get someone to fill the hole at center.
