I get this came from a Detroit fan but I think he's wrong on this. I believe Laffy is going to be a generational talent and when you get a chance to add one of those, you don't pass up the opportunity. Although the Red Wings need a LOT of help talent-wise, it's a mistake IMO to give up Laffy for a variety of lesser talent.

I really have a hard time believing Domi is worth a top 10 pick.

Domi, Hawks and Habs 2nds for Buffalo's 1st would be fair.

Even if lets say you were able to pull off those trades to get the extra picks and even if the value for the 1st OV was "technically" fair, doesn't necessarily mean that Detroit should do it though. Some times its not about just offering fair value, its about making them an offer they can't refuse. I'm pretty sure whoever gets 1st OV, just like any other year, they will need an offer they can't refuse.

Which then you have to ask yourself, is Lafreniere even worth doing that for? IMO No. (Assuming it was an offer they could't refuse)

Moving into the top 3 of any draft from outside top 5 is already almost never gonna happen again, trading for the 1st OV from outside the top 5 is virtually impossible. One team has to lose that trade from the get go for it to happen and I think teams are just to wary of being that team nowadays.

I agree with most others here that the 1st overall just doesn’t get moved... unless Eichel is involved somehow, haha.

But the VAN trade is interesting to me. If the Canucks have to give up a 1st rounder to move Eriksson I would hope they’d at least be able to get a cheap, somewhat useful player coming back in the deal like this, even if it means adding the little extra.

I just thought that the incentive here for DET would be to acquire 2 (potentially 3) elite prospects instead of one franchise player. I think it woud help them more in the long run to ends up with lets say Rossi, Sanderson and Askarov. This is imo an offer they couldnt refuse.

On MTL's side, its clear that giving multiple elite pieces for one potential franchise player is a lot but keep in mind that we havent had that kind of forward in a very long time. And he is a native kif playing LW (its a need for us).

So based on past drafts, its basically :
Hughes for 3 of Zegras, Cozens, Caufield, Podkolzin, Newhook or Soderstrom
Dahlin for Hughes, Boqvist, Farabee
Hischier for 3 of Necas, Suzuki, Brannstrom, Vilardi or Tippett.

Thats way too much and it wouldnt make sense for MTL. Other teams would give more then. I traded him to BUF because there are many threads about it but any teams willing to give a top prospect or a top 10 pick (and there would definitely be some) would work as well. Domi as a 2C in BUF seems like a great fit though. Id be thrilled to see this line Reinhart - Domi - Cozens.

Its not too much, you're getting a top 7 pick, those 2nd round picks are years away from being anything and Montreal has a ton of prospects already.

Still, we need those... We drafted Romanov, Struble, Norlinder and Fleury with second and third rounders in the past 3 drafts. We need those picks badly. Plus, Domi is an established player with 70pts + potential and a C... The pick remains only a project. The player wed draft (or DET in this scenario) may never play a single game in the NHL whereas Domi is already a dominant player

Haha yeah for sure but having plenty doesnt means that it doesnt matter for us to overpay. If a trade ever happens, im excited to see the true value of Domi for sure

Yeah, Sabres pass quickly. MTL adds far more than a 3rd. If the move 7OA it'll be for a better player than Domi.

In that situation, due to the depth of the draft, I would not do the Detroit trade if I was MTL, even if the value was fair. Imagine getting 3 of Perfetti, Rossi, Holloway, Quinn, Sanderson, Lundell, Mercer...

Fair enough. Assume this offer is what it is then, why would MTL do it and should they? I don't think so, no.

IMHO The Habs making this move above is proof as to why the politics here in QC is the reason they will never be as good as they can be.

Side note: Its not even just three 1sts and a 2nd for Lafreniere anymore, its also losing Mete and adding two years of Ericksson........ I love Lafreniere as much as the next guy but he isn't McDavid, Matthews, Eichel, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc. Great player but not generational.

Id argue that he is in the same category as Matthews and Eichel who are franchise players (not generational). Even without two extra first rounders, we're still stacked for the next 2-3 years imo.
The depth and skills of this lineup is among the best in the league, plus we get to have our own Matthews, MacKinnon, Eichel, etc.

Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Lafrenière-KK-Drouin
Caufield (at the end of 2020-2021)-Suzuki-Armia
Lehkonen-Poehling-Evans (Byron)
Ylonen
Romanov-Weber
Chiarot-Petry
Norlinder (by the end of 2020-2021)-Fleury
Struble*-Juulsen

+two high second round picks

By keeping the 3 picks, we're simply adding players that wont be ready until 2021-2022 at the very least and even though this next line up would be great, we'd have too much skilled players for so many pp time and ice time in general.

Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Caufield-Suzuki-Perfetti
Drouin-KK-Jarvis
Lehkonen-Poehling-Armia
Byron, Evans, Ylonen

Romanov-Weber
Sanderson-Petry
Chiarot-Fleury
Norlinder, Struble, Juulsen

And that is if those guys pan out... I have no worry about Perfetti and Sanderson but they sure have less chances than Laf to reach their max potential.

I'll have to disagree with that assessment. I do not think Lafreniere is in that calibre group with most hockey analysts agreeing with me and on top of all this, hes a winger, those guys are centers. They control the game way more than wingers do.

He is being compared to guys like Huberdeau. Great player, dont get me wrong but 9/10 people say Barkov is the better player because centers are more important.

Plus I mean you basically made the point against it in your previous post to convince me Detroit should accept.....

In any one of those drafts, id take 3 of those players over the first overall any day.

Make no mistake about it, if Lafreniere's name was Alex Lawton, we wouldnt even be having this conversation. Thats the problem IMO.
