Thatcher Demko Trade

Created by: redwingsfan04
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2020
Published: Jun. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Red Wings take on Loui Eriksson's contract which wouldn't hurt them too much considering the amount of cap space they have. To take on Eriksson, the Red Wings acquire a potential long-term goalie in Thatcher Demko if he pans out. In addition, they add another 2nd round pick in the 2021 draft.

The Canucks are able to dump Loui Eriksson's contract which will save them $6 000 000 for the next 2 seasons. This will allow them to resign pending UFA's including Toffoli, Tanev, and Markstrom. Losing Thatcher Demko won't hurt the Canucks too much since they will be able to keep Markstrom and will still have a good goalie prospect in Michael DiPietro. In this scenario, the Canucks are able to unload Eriksson without giving up a 1st round pick.

The Red Wings might not be willing to take on Eriksson's contract without acquiring a 1st round pick, but I like the idea of acquiring Demko, and giving the Canucks another idea if they don't want to lose another 1st round pick. Also, extra mid/late round picks or B/C grade prospects could be included in the trade if the value isn't equal.

Take the conditions off of the 5th going to Vancouver, at best it turns into a 4th, taking Eriksson is getting them out of a serious jam, it's worth Demko and a 2nd, they should be happy to do it without losing multiple 1sts and gaining cap space for Hughes and Pettersson's new deals!

Eriksson/Demko is enough to get a deal or don’t bother. Don’t see Benning moving a 1st til all options are exhausted or eat it & bury Loui in Utica. Depth up front means no room even though he is not a liability & plays good D & on the PK. Some are useless like Lucic & Backes not Loui.

Canucks accept, could live with moving a lower tier prospect as well to sweeten the deal.

Really depends how high Det is on Demko, goalies are impossible to predict.

I'd rather move DiPietro than Demko for timeline purposes.

As a wings fan I accept either goalie.

Either one would be fine by this Wings fan.

Eriksson + DiPietro + 2nd for a 5th

I'd do that. The Canucks' goalie pipeline would be absolutely depleted, but that's fine for now.

Sounds good, Have Benning fax the papers to Stevie Y.
