Description
I saw this comparison on a different site, so I felt it would be good to discuss here. Malkin & MacKinnon are arguably the 2nd best centres of their respective eras, but the question is, who is better?

Over their careers, Malkin has scored 416 goals & 1076 points in 907 career regular season games (point per game of 1.19). In the playoffs, he has 63 goals and 186 points in 162 games (point per game of 1.03). His best season was 2011-12 when he put up 50 goals and 109 points in 75 games (1.453 PPG).

MacKinnon career wise has 190 goals & 495 points in 525 games (PPG of 0.94). His best season is 2019/20 as he put up 35 goals and 93 points in 69 games (1.43 PPG).

For me, I would say that Nathan MacKinnon is currently equal to prime Evgeni Malkin, but by the end of his career, I expect him to go down as the better player. What’d y’all think?

Prime Malkin was a beast so I would say him as of right now. Mackinnon still has time to change my mind though

Prime Malkin might have been the best player in the world. I would have to think really hard if I would take prime Malkin or prime Crosby ….. only issue was prime malkin only showed up when he was pissed or every now and then

Malkin has been so good for so long, MacKinnon can't compare. Now if MacKinnon can maintain his play like he did like last season for the next five years, then it might be valid discussion.

As of now I'd say prime Malkin, but MacKinnon has time to improve. He's only 24.

I'd take Malkin. An absolute beast for over a decade, both in the regular season and playoffs. Hard to look past that consistency and longevity. Mackinnon could change my mind with a couple of dominant playoff runs though.

Btw, you have a typo in the description, it should say that Malkin has 168 playoff points, not 186.

Agreed. Pissed off focused Malkin was arguably better than Crosby.

i always hate when people compare Malkin to Ovechkin for this threads exact reason. common hockey folk forget how good Malkin is. i personally think Ovechkin is better but how could you get mad if someone said Malkin. you could argue at times he was the best player in the World. Hell i would take prime Semin over Ovechkin …...issue is Semin was such a POS and never played to his abilities

Im taking prime Malkin. Just such a dominate player whenever he needed to be. Its funny to say but he kind of coasts off sid when both are in the line up, you know get the normal ppg but when Sid has been injured he just takes over and elevates to another level. Same goes for in the playoffs, he just becomes unstoppable. Mack will be there and have his chance for that soon enough but Prime Malkin proved he was right behind Crosby for best center of his generation.

Prime Malkin easily and that is no disrespect to Mack.

Mack still has time to catch up though, people forget he's still pretty young. Malkin has already left his prime. Kind of unfair to compare when one guy has had a lot more data to show.

Its Malkin's size that puts him over Mack though overall. They both are silly talented but that extra size Malkin has made him unstoppable when he wanted to be. Plus having a nasty side only magnifies why Malkin in his prime was beyond stupid good.

This is hard. At the end of their careers, I think we will be saying Mackinnon.

At his absolute best Malkin > Crosby, he is just way less consistent. So in my opinion Malkin. Mackinnon hasn't been close to as good as 2009 Malkin (yet)

See everybody above. Let’s not forget Malkin has won a Hart and Art Ross to go with a Conn Smythe and 3 Stanley Cups. That’s go to the HOF, straight to HOF career.

Just as many as Crosby would have without Malkin.
