Sam Reinhart and Rebuilding the Foundation

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2020
Published: Jun. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Okay, for the past couple of weeks I've been saying that the Sabres shouldn't do anything drastic, and should keep their 6 core players, 4 prime prospects and four top picks in the next two drafts intact. But I saw a suggestion from a Colorado fan that got me to re-think that conviction. Here's my take on that trade.

Following up on their selection of RW Alexander Holtz with the #7 overall pick, with the #29 overall pick the Buffalo Sabres select RW Tyson Foerster. Then with the 38th overall pick, Buffalo chooses RD Topi Niemela.

Down the road: two of Holtz, Kaut and Foerster should provide the top two RWs. The third or Thompson should be the #3RW. Kahun and Skinner are #2LW and #3LW. Cozens should be the #2C and Mittelstadt, Davidsson or Ruotsalainen should be the #3C. Dahlin, Graves, Johnson, Samuelsson and Jokiharju are the nucleus of a first-class young defense. Ullmark and Luokkonen should be a great goaltending tandem. One of Ristolainen or Montour should be moved prior to the trade deadline so that they are not lost for nothing in the expansion draft (the other will be unless Seattle can be bought off).

Isn’t he Eichels best friend? Probably not a smart move.

This right side of the attack looks very doubtful. unsure

If there are other than hockey reasons, then that obviously would affect the likelihood of this trade, but as outsiders, I don't think that any one of us really knows what the relationship between Eichel and Reinhart is. I don't think that we can factor in speculation like this.

Yes, this season it won't be Buffalo's strongest asset. But I'm trying to build for the future. Rome wasn't built in a day and the Sabres won't be built in one off-season.

why i was worried about this, is BUF already has a good defense core. And given Jokiharju is on the rise, he should continue to have top 4 minutes.

I think if this trade happened, they'd need to trade Miller/Montour/Risto for a middle sixer who can score decently. Moving Kaut straight to top line minutes kinda scares me too, given he's more defensive oriented.

What the Sabres really need to do is bring in some competent hockey people instead of puppets to run the team and the incompetent owners need to get out of trying to run a hockey team. Have not seen such a mismanaged franchise for years in the NHL.

All true. See the last sentence in my Team Explanation. I'd also move Johansson somewhere, but I didn't want to cloud up the post with yet another trade for people to focus on.

In this is the problem, we can not wait until Cozens, Holtz and other prospects will be a real force. Jack said quite clearly that he was tired of losing, the team lacked veterans and more best players, I don’t think that trading Reinhart makes sense, and even if Sam asks for too much a contract and we have to trade it, would be better to make a different type of deal.

Kaut isn't defense oriented. He's just solid on both sides of the puck with no real weaknesses. Being a good 200ft player doesn't make someone "defense oriented". He's got some nice skill and an underrated shot, particularly in the slot on the PP. Him and Necas linked up really well together for Czech Republic at the WJC.

That said I agree that ideally you'd want him to be eased into the NHL in the bottom 6 to start with.

You want the Sabres to trade a young, dynamic 60 point RW for an end of the first round guy who in 3 years probably won’t be as good as the guy they just drafted 2nd overall and then traded? I’m sorry but that’s a **** explanation.

With Eichel though, that kinda works. You want the puck on Eichel's stick and he doesn't need much help when he's on the ice. All he's gotta be able to do is hit the net and pass.

No, it's not a one-for-one trade. Have someone read the entire thing to you.

Thank god someone said it. Overall, this trade has a ton of merit. Decent replacement to fill in, a desperately needed LD, and a 1st.

Apparently they ARE very very good friends and even lived together when Jack was a rookie. Trading him would piss Eichel off

k he isnt close to one of the best defensive defensemen in the NHL. he had 30 games that were definitely at a high level, but don't put the cart before the horse. Takes more than that small of a sample size to give somebody a title like that.

Here’s the problem:
Eichel is basically demanding that we win NOW
So trading Sam for futures just isn’t gonna happen

Jack lived with Matt Moulson when he first came here
Him & Reinhart were roommates after that
They now both have their own places
