Major Defensive Overhaul

Created by: MitchMarner_16

Description
Chicago Trade:
As per many Hawks fans on this site, this is a very fair trade.

CBJ Trade:
This is where I might get ripped to shreds, but I think the value is fair. The Jackets get some Speed and Scoring, in exchange for defence. Anyway, I see ppl saying Jones is worth Marner, so I took a return I would be happy with if I traded Mitch, and gave it to cBJ. In essence, Nylander, Liljegren, 1st, 4th = Marner, so that must mean Nylander, Liljegren, 1st, 4th = Jones.

Columbus fans, please help me out and let me know if I am way off, or if the value is close! Please let me know! Remember, this is just an idea for fun, so don’t rip me apart!

Leafs can't totally ripped on that Jones trade. Two years of Jones for all of that. No thanks. More belief that a RHD is gonna change the Leafs fortunes. Jones hasn't done it previously with his teams.

So what would you take out of the trade? The 1st?

Nylander's caphit and term is way more appealing than Marner.

I mean, short-term, that defense is looking mighty improved to what it looks like presently with Barrie and Ceci. However, what are the Leafs going to do when they have to resign Rielly, Jones and Murphy all at the same time following the 2021-22 season? Seems incredibly unlikely, even if the cap does move up after next season. What I think is the more likely scenario with this club is that the Leafs find a way to acquire younger defenders (perhaps less proven) with control and/or term. It's why a lot of Leaf fans see Phillipe Myers as a fit and he is an RFA coming off an ELC. Other possibilities might include Ryan Graves (though he is left handed, and to a lesser extent, Connor Timmins, also from Colorado), Damon Severson, Mackenzie Weegar, etc.

I think the Leafs should strongly considering trading Nylander, selling high on the great season he just had, and find a way to bring in younger defenders with more term and control. Nothing against Seth Jones. He's an elite defender, but will also need to get paid big money after this contract is up, arguably even more than what Morgan Rielly would/should get.

Hypothetically if the Leafs were to aquire Jones then there would be no point in Aquiring Murphy to play 3rd pair

Sorry, I think it's a ridiculous trade for the Leafs. You really think 2 years of Jones is worth all of that? Really? And we might not even have a 2020/21 season due to Covid.
Jones....seven seasons, including this one. five playoff appearances, one playoff round win. It's just more RHD fascination that other teams players especially RHD are going to be the messiah for the Leafs.
Leafs are gonna need the cost efficient Liljegren and likely that first round to be in their lineup soon.
Four years of Nylander for two years of Jones might be fair (if we play next season). Maybe Columbus doesn't do that either.
Sure you've helped the defence for two years, but RW is considerably weaker and so left wing because of Mikheyvov going toe right side. Leafs lose on term and picks also.

It would probably take Mitch Marner for Seth jones, And Columbus isn't moving Jones so it's pretty moot anyways.

The offer above is much stronger than most that are made by Leaf's fans for Jones.
Having a ton of offensive firepower is great, but the old adage in just about every sport is true...defence wins championships.

CBJ traded away their future #1C (Johanssen) for Jones, and actually won that trade, as Jones has become a much better player at his position than Johanssen.
That being said, i respectfully disagree that Jones hasn't "changed the fortune" of his prior teams.
The reason CBJ got Jones was the backlog at the position in Nashville, they focused on stocking defensive talent and Jones was viewed as "expendable" behind Weber, Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, etc. (a very solid defence worthy of a cup). Too many other factors go into the equasion too....scoring, goaltending, team chemistry, etc.
In order to obtain a player like Jones though, a team would have to overpay, by a lot, to entice the Jackets to make the deal.
In the end, I agree that: 1) giving up that much to obtain Jones would not be worth it if you cannot lock him down long term with his next contract; & 2) Jackets will not want to part with Jones even for this package because their plan is to keep him for the long term, he is that good.

4 years of Nylander for 4 years of Pesce should be the trade imo

Would love to acquire Jones but, that price tag is ridiculous. Leafs are getting fleeced in this deal.

If you removed the picks, I'd think hard about it.

I still don't think the CBJ and Toronto are viable trading partners at this point.

The Leafs are arguably overpaying and it's still not enough. We don't want to move Jones. It's that simple.

As much as Columbus may want to lock up Jones, I really don't see it happening. Premium UFAs has a choice of destinations. I'll say Jones signs with Dallas. Regarding Jones to Leafs. Always seems ridiculous to me that 95% of trades of Jones, or Manson or Murphy or Hamilton (name that RHD)have this players coming to the Leafs. Have these players no value to any other teams?

Dear leaf fans,

Please stop circling around to the same players. Try something new. The Jones, Manson and Pesce trades are getting old.

Sincerely,

All of Capfriendly.

Let’s be real for 1 minute, neither Columbus or Toronto are going to make this trade, neither team wants to give up what the other wants.

Hard pass from the Ducks. Not that Rowney is untouchable or anything, far from it, but we're not about to move a quality depth player for a couple of mid-round picks THREE DRAFTS from now AND eat salary.

No thanks.
