Description
Trying to approach this with a level of realism. Far too many fantasy deals involving high profile players lately. That isn't going to happen.

This management team has assembled this group with a vision in mind. I don't expect that they will deviate far from that path even with a static salary cap next season.

Does anybody really think that they brought in players like Barabonov and Lehtonen to not use them? C'mon.

Everybody is trading Dermott. Why not just sign him at a reasonable cost and use him effectively?

This notion that there has to be an absolute stud RHD brought in to have success is nonsense. One player will not change the trajectory of this team that much. Buying into a defensive system that works and they stick to, will. That'll come with maturity.

I'd love to keep Clifford but I just don't see him being an affordable option given his UFA status. Anyone who thinks that he will sign for much less than he already makes is kidding themselves. He will chase the money. I am sure of that.

I keep going back to this Anaheim deal involving Deslauriers. I think a guy like that would be a fine replacement on the 4th line. He has a similar game as KC and comes with a reasonable term and AAV.

The goaltending is set for next year. I expect no change there.

The D core could use an add but, I think that the team is confident in the players that they have at present. (Dermott included).

There is the expansion draft to consider too moving forward and the possible exposing of a key defensman already on the team or if they bring one in via trade who is eligible.

Spezza should be back as the 4th line centre. He has proved his worth and wants to be here.

Robertson will likely get a shot to make the team. In a sheltered roll, he could really be a difference maker on the 3rd line.

If the Leafs only made one move in the offseason, I would be comfortable with something like this.

I really don't see any way that one of the mid tier forwards is not moved if Robertson is indeed in the plans. My pick would be Johnsson because I will always keep a centre over a winger. (Kerfoot stays IMO).

They likely re-sign Gauthier but I have not included him in this example.

Players like Engvall, Barabonov, Malgin, Petan are likely rotation players on the 4th line.

I really don't think that we will see much change moving forward.

I'm okay with that.

Nice TLDR lol

Idk where you get need a stud D. Lets start with cannot fill a 23 player roster cuz greed won out not Dubas. Any GM in the league could sign those contracts. As for D it’s top 4 that plays D & more F’s that break a sweat. Plugging in min salaries is the finger in the dike approach created by only the GM. 33m for 3 F’s is & always will be the problem whether Leafs fans like to hear it or not or defend it as blind homers. The results have not justified that spending & the effect it has had on the roster. A bubble team that has 3 of the weakest teams in hockey in their division isn’t scaring anyone.

Granted the offence is very dynamic but it screeches to a halt right there. 5th worst GA & injuries are no excuse look no further than CBJ the Leafs opponent.

I agree with the idea that you won;t see much movement but that movement has to come on the back end not going to get a stud but a serviceable RD must be in the cards or we will have another year like this year. Covid really screwed the Leafs cap this year the $84-$88 would have been nice and needed lets hope for a huge rebound for 21-22

It isn't about the player being right handed IMO. It is about the quality of the player.

This notion that unless the team adds a defensman who is right handed they are doomed to fail is nonsense.

Quality over handedness every day of the week as far as I am concerned.

I do agree that an upgrade of some kind to the D core would be a step in the right direction. I just don't see it as very likely.

The preference would be someone who plays or can play on the right side. but yes upgrading the D is the goal

Found this that uses a prediction model on the Dermott & Mikheyev contracts. https://editorinleaf.com/2020/03/23/toronto-maple-leafs-contract-projections/2/
you might be light by $300k on Dermott for 2 years and $200k on Soup, but you have the cap space so all good. Leafs might be able to resign Cliffordat $1m, but probably have to give him an 3 year deal to do so. Would assume he can get $1.2m+/2 years somewhere. But your analysis is pretty sound. Move Johnsson for picks as left side is the strongest. If you want to upgrade the D, then you start having to move Kerfoot and Kapanen to shuffle the forward deck/fill the holes they create at 3C and 3RW. Unless Barbanov is an actual 3RW and not a 4+.
