If Dubas was Better at Negotiating Contracts

Created by: Leafs_and_Sens_Fan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2020
Published: Jun. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Matthews signs 11Mx6
Marner signs 9.5Mx5

Marner wants to play in Toronto because it's where he grew up and his GF and family are all in Toronto. I wouldn't mind giving him a 5 year deal and then signing him for 8 afterwards.

Signing Matthews for 5 years was a terrible decision. I give him a 50% chance of leaving in 4 years unless he gets a max contract.

I just wanted to make him average at negotiating contracts not a contract negotiating genius.

I wouldn't blame Dubas. Shanahan and MLSE has the a whole whack of high paying executives....they should have seen league comparables and stuck to that structure.
Started with Nylander. Leafs were in first place at a 120 point season when he finally signed November 30. I would have made him sit out the season if he didn't want to a reasonable deal . 6.5m X 6 might have been an overpay.
Aho and Marner had identical stats for two seasons. 8.5m X 5 was the going rate.
Matthews, doesn't deserve to the second highest paid paid in the league, especially on a five year contract.

It first started with Tavares getting 11M and the two youngsters getting greedy and jealous.

If Tavares signed for 10M, Matthews would have done 9-10M and Marner at 8-9M. Saving you guys 3-4M for a 1RD.

I think 11Mx6 would have been fair. It's a lot better than 11.6Mx5

/starts a "if Lou was better at negotiating contracts" thread where he signed Matthews and Nylander a year earlier to insane good contracts, got Marleau for 2x2 and Zaitsev for 1x2

Rumour was Arizona had offer sheeted a 12m X 7....unsigned by Matthews. Think I might have let Matthews sign with Arizona, Leafs would have 4 first rounders and more importantly 11.642m X 5 to spend better than Matthews . Especially in post Covid ...11.642m goes a long way.

Dubas did a bad job at signing all three kids. The comparables used should be Kucherov and Rantanen when speaking of Marner. All three are all point a game players.

Plus we wouldn't have had to trade a 1st to get rid of Marleau.

5 1sts + Tavares for Matthews. I'd do that.

Dubas' contract for Marner got vetoed. 9.5Mx3 with a high QO.

I glad it was. But his current contract should never been offered. 8.5m X 5 was the standard. 9.0 X 6 for a six year deal

I agree. Terrible deal. But I disagree that you can't blame Dubas. MLSE vetoed his deal because it was even worse.
