Just keep Strome

Created by: Kyle_Davidson
Team: 2020-21 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2020
Published: Jun. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The best move with Strome is to sign him long term at a cost efficient contract.

I figure the retention is worth the Upgrade to the second round pick.

3 scoring lines, a decent defensive core (with Beaudin in the wings)

We don’t know what Lundell will be (if he’s available), we should just focus on getting better.

For the Leafs. I like Murphy, just not for Kapanen

It almost makes too much sense though. Hopefully you’ll warm up the the idea eventually.

It makes sense to add Murphy (or somebody of the ilk), but for a guy that is 4 years younger, cheaper, and who the team has more control over due to him being RFA at the end of his deal, while Murphy is UFA? Thats all added value heading back to Chicago that makes me not like the deal.

A fair point, and one I haven’t heard yet.

Realistically I would hope that isn’t a problem, and I’m not sure how to approach that from a value perspective.

Hard to say what might happen.

I agree with you, but think the Leafs are winning out. A quality, top 4, cost controlled, RHD is more valuable than a middle six winger (3rd line winger here). Plain and simple.

I have zero issue keeping Strome. I don't think he'll sign an 8 year deal for $5.5M. He just saw his buddy Debrincat sign a 3 year $6.4M deal, but the real kicker of that deal is the backend salary being $9M!

Taht 2nd rounder included makes this a no for me.
I really want to add another pick or 2 to the Leafs so we can draft another guy or 2.

Really excited for the draft.

I think the point of the contract would be security, and I’m sure Strome craves that after his misadventure in Arizona. With the uncertainty in the cap, and how likely/unlikely it is to be flat for a couple of years I think that 5.5 is a decent value in this new state.

If we're gonna do that with Strome (which I don't mind), we might as well see if Kubalik takes a 1 year deal and then as long as all goes well we give him 7 or 8 years with the money coming off the books from Saad and Crow. I would say just give kubalik term this year but we don't have the cap space for the higher AAV anyways. Plus, 1 more year to see what we have with him wouldn't hurt.

Why do you think this though? You're asking a guy that made the Maatta/Kahun trade to turn around and trade away a better Dman...for a worse forward...that has a cap hit 3x Kahun.

Plus the cap will take a jump with Seattle coming on board, so Hawks will be in good cap shape.

Crow shouldn't get $6M, $4M for 2 years...maybe $4.5M. We can expose Crow to the expansion next summer too. Strome should be bridged for 3 years IMO at $4M...let's see what happens with Dach and presumably we draft Lundell or Rossi. Lundell could easily replace the need for Stome but like you said, not sure that pans out this year and likely is a next summer decision. Also will be interesting to see what happens with Barrat and whether he can take on 3rd line duties. As such, don't want to over-commit to Strome right now and we own his rights so we don't need to. Expansion will also increase the cap which allows us to put Kubalik on a short term deal and if he repeats his performance, we can give him a long term big money deal he deserves.

LOVE these front 4 lines (although Carps and Highmore should rotate regularly). 3 very solid scoring lines and 4 defensively responsible lines up front that can take some pressure off our backend. Defense will be dependent on Mitchell, Boqvist and Carlsson all stepping up and maturing. Ironically, the one I'm most concerned with is Boqvist as he is physically not as strong as Mitchell or Carlsson and we saw that when he took a concussion at the end of this season.

Why I also love the brodin/strome trade, I think it highly is solely dependent on drafting a 3C that can step right in and at the #9OA, the only realistic guy that can do that is Lundell and even then, asking a 18 year kid to step right in like Dach has is a tall order.

I would take Rossi knowing he needs another year to develop over Lundell who's ready right away 10 times out of 10. Rossi is fantastic. Perfetti over Lundell too. I don't care is they are smaller players, they are both really strong and good at protecting the puck, Lundell should be our third option if we do go with a center.

I like it but the 3rd rnd pick going back to TO is Chicago's not Calgary's,basically it's a wash Murphy for Kapenen Leafs move down the draft 10-20 spots and save a Million in cap on Murphy which certainly helps ice a 23 man roster

Certainly not a deal breaker, but I think the CGY pick and the Chicago pick aren’t going to be too far apart.

I agree. I see this trade in about 80% of hawks posts lately. I dont remember who said it, but both sides will never agree on the value. Both players are more valuable to their own teams. Murphy is a huge piece of the right side right now, and the hawks cant afford to start 3 rookies on D. Wingers are fairly easy to replace via free agency or bringing up someone from the AHL. a top 4 D is way more valuable to the hawks than a top 9 winger (which is what kap is unless they move saad).

He isn't cost controlled for very long.
Or at least not long enough to justify giving up Kap for him.

Its definitely a factor. I don't want to ignore that. I just happen to think the Hawks can find a KK type for less asset cost.
