Actually, what will happen is that if Arizona doesn’t win the lottery, Taylor Hall signs with whoever wins it.

(Which I know makes no sense positionally, but whatever.)

Since NJD will pick 7th, I'd love to see MTL land the top pick. I think it'd be great for hockey to see Alexis play for his hometown/home province team. Otherwise, keep him away from the Metro division, especially the Rangers.

now, my rankings for maximum "Hockey Internet Melts Down" potential:
6) everybody else not mentioned henceforth
5) the Original Six teams composed of the Leafs and the Canadiens (everybody would scream "rigged" for the Leafs, and mostly everybody would scream "rigged" for the Canadiens, but it'd be a nice story, and i'm not opposed to that)
4) the Original Six teams composed of the Rangers and Blackhawks (everybody would scream "rigged," and the "3 Cups in 6 years" Blackhawks haven't faded away to enough dust for people to not get angry)
3) the Penguins (everyone would definitely have an aneurysm if Crosby and Malkin got a bloody generational talent on an ELC to play on their wing)
2) 'Lottery Ball Specialist' Taylor Hall and his band of Merry Men (the Coyotes)
1) the Oilers (you know the Internet would have a collective meltdown if this happened)

No matter what happens, it's an unique situation when some fans actively wants their team to lose the qualification round.

And very many people are going to end salty to the solution.

yeah, it was a terribly short-sighted move, as Arpon Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin noted in The Athletic:

Quote:
[T]his is why the draft lottery being held Friday was a remarkably stupid move by the NHL. It was hoping to give the non-play-in teams something to look forward to, to generate some buzz in their cities. But they never stopped to think what would happen in the play-in cities if what happened Friday night actually happened, which was very possible since the non-play-in teams had a 24.5 percent chance of winning the lottery, just a shade behind the Ottawa Senators at 25 percent (and we both knew the Sens weren’t going to win). So now, fans in Montreal, Chicago, Arizona, Minnesota and elsewhere are thinking the same thing: how the worst thing that could happen to their teams would be to win the play-in, an opportunity that they don’t even deserve. So, instead of generating buzz, the NHL has turned a bunch of fans against their own teams.
