Future of the Kings

Created by: irgids
Team: 2020-21 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2020
Published: Jun. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bonus, the cap hit is really low too. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings trade to get Eichel or the like. Similar to when the team got Richards for prospects, the Kings pool is deep.

NO BYFIELD DUDE. Research scouting reports. Byfied is so overrated its incredible. Not a very hard worker unless he's in the offensive zone. Stutzle is a hard worker all of the ice with a huge motor and his play making ability is unreal. Byfields isnt. Stutzle is the kind of guy that can turn a franchise around just by watching him. My ranking goes like this:
Lafreniere
Stutzle
Rossi
Byfield

Not to mention we already have 3 franchise centers to sort out and pick named Turcotte, Vilardi, and Kopitar.

Always take the center over the winger. The Patrick Kane year was the exception to the rule when he was drafted. The Kings team that won was built from Goaltending, Strong Defense, and Center Depth in that order. Byfield is projected as a better center than Turcotte and Madden. Being that deep allows the kings to trade for established players like they did to get Richards.

Do you personally know anything about Byfield? Have you watched him play? Scene legit scouting reports?

I don't even know what it would look like, but Eichel has been upset with losing in Buffalo and I think the Kings have an interesting mix of cap space and prospect pool to make that kind of transaction.

As an armchair GM, I'm wondering if the #2 pick + Turcotte or Madden (prospect) + Kempe (established) or Luff or Wagner is enough.

Kings traded Wayne Simmons (established) + Brayden Schenn (Prospect) + 2nd round pick for Mike Richards.

6'4" Center with speed and a shot in transition. Yes, I've seen him play. He's 17 and has the most upside. Because the Kings are so deep that gives him time to develop in the O.

Now lets talk about the cons:
He doesn't take advantage of his size, he's not very physical at all for a 6'4 center.
Most of his production comes from transitioning from his end to the offensive Zone a lot of which are two on ones ect. That's not going to fly in the NHL.
He's not elite when it comes to play making. Some say he's not even in the top 10 as far as playing(I would say he's not in the top 5)
He's lacks effort in the defensive zone, sometime he just kind of stays in one spot and watches his teammates the work almost like he's windows from a long short then all the sudden he gets the puck and flies to the offensive zone.
He's a great skater when it comes to straight lines, but when he's curling or skating east to west he's not very strong on his feet especially when he's being pressured.
He doesn't have the best work ethic either. It only seems like he does when he's in the other zone anyway.

Pros
He's a really good goal scorer
He's fast and a pretty good skater for a 6'4 kid.

Personally, there's not much else I like about his game.

Stutzle does everything better except scoring goals.

Why would we pick Byfield when Byfield and Stutzle are neck and neck for who might go 2nd? Again, our center pool is stacked and dont be surprised if Vilardi and Turcotte turn our to be better players. Stutzle will make a great LW so he's the best option for the Kings.

Team would be better off drafting Byfield, going Kopitar-Byfield-Vilardi down the middle, and trading the slack center depth fro established NHLers like Eichel. Team has cap room and prospects to land him especially because Eichel has talked about being unhappy losing in Buffalo.

They won't have cap when Vilardi, Turcotte, Kaliyev, "Byfield", ect are due for contract renewals. Your way of think is unrealistic and shows how wrong you are about drafting Byfield. I have already explained to you we have 2 top caliber centers in the making Turcotte and Vilardi as well our #1 guy rn, Kopitar and suggest drafting Byfield then trading for a guy like Eichel, who is also a center? Try to get hockey common sense. You lack understanding of the Kings needs. In this particular case, Byfield and Stutzle are neck and neck for who will go 2nd that the Kings can actually draft based on needs rather than best available.

Vilardi, Turcotte, Kaliyev, "Byfield" are all *RESTRICTED* free agents. The team will have plenty of room for their contract renewals. Your way of thinking is unrealistic and shows how wrong you are about the NHL and its salary structure.

Vilardi is up for a new contract in 2 years.
Turcotte, Kaliyev, and Madden are up in 3 years.
Byfield, because he is 17, will slide to 4 years when the kings keep him in the OHL.

By the time the Kings need to re-sign Turcotte, Kaliyev, and Madden the only players remaining on the Kings roster are Kopitar and Doughty. The team has ~$60Million in today's cap dollars available, let alone future cap dollars.

Secondarily, an offer sheet is the only thing you are worried about when signing a restricted free agent. An offer sheet has not been accepted since Dustin Penner in 2007. Before that it was a no-name in 1997. Auston Matthews would have been given a max offer sheet from Arizona had he made it to free agency, but none of the Kings prospects are Auston Matthews.

The kings have all kinds of room to re-sign after the ELCs expire and have no behemoths to overcome at that time. This is all assuming that these prospects pan out and don't become Michael Merch... which is why you continue to draft Center. Not all of them are going to hit, and if they do you can move them to wing.

I've already explained to you why the Kings need to draft Stutzle over Byfield and many people agree with me. Including McKenzie and many other reputable people who have Stutzle at 2. Some scouts rank Byfield 2-6.

You just insulted my knowledge then you contradicted yourself by saying "always draft a center" are not aware Stutzle is a center too?

Some scouts rank Stutzle 2-8 (https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/348134/tim-stutzle) . The kings may very well end up taking Stutzle, but the history of drafting has smiled on the teams who drafted center over wing. The draft is a crap shoot, it's the team's job to maximize their odds of success. All of these players could end up being Nail Yakupov.

When you say stupid things about the salary of EL players in 3 years, yeah, you're going to be made fun of.

Stutzle might be a center in Europe, it's very likely that he won't be a center in North America. Byfield is a North American center.

Drafting Stutzle over Byfield would be maximizing the Kings future success. This could be the last draft Kings can draft a winger of Stutzle caliber since they probably won't suck as bad anymore. Kings are perfect fine with Vilardi and Turcotte at center.

Plus having 5 franchise caliber centers fight over who is #1 and who is #2 isnt "maximizing success" it is causing potential lockeroom issues and making people getting traded. Sounds like a toxic lockerrom 3 years from now to me...
