2020 Playoffs - Taylor Hall

Created by: AvsCOL
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 30, 2020
Published: Jun. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Taylor Hall would be a perfect fit with the Avs style of play. Great transition player, with the ability to anchor a second line. Great option on PP1. Newhook could be an option at 3C, depending on if they think he's ready.

Personally I’d rather go a cheaper route in Toffoli or a cheaper more versatile one in Namestikov. I think that Hall like contract would be a serious albatross considering during it’s duration the Avs would have to sign basically everybody besides Mikko and Girard to extensions, especially with all the chatter of the cap being flat the next couple of seasons. Now if he would take a short term deal 1 or 2 years by all means.

The thing is, I think all the contracts will work out long term. Erik Johnson, Donskoi, and Compher all finish their contracts just as MacKinnon comes up, so there's the money for him. Landeskog will probably get a ~$3mil raise, which would be opened up by the Calvert/Cole contracts expiring, and Makar will probably look for around $9-9.5mil. It's definitely possible to sign Hall long term, you'd just have to trade one of the 3rd/4th liners that are making more than they're worth.

Avalanche are in a very unique, and fortunate situation where they not only have the assets for a star player, but the cap room as well.

they dont have that much cap room. 7m in a flat cap is what they can spend in UFA this offseason after they move one of Graves or Zadorov is what they can spend in a flat cap and be safe next year to ensure they Keep Landy, Extend Makar, and either extend Grubi or move on and sign a new goalie.

There will be deep cuts coming after you sign a Hall to this sort of money. Moving Donskoi and losing Jost or Compher to expansion isnt enough to offset it. The fact you had to move a very good player in Donskoi to make room for hall shows exactly that. Avs dont need 2 9m wingers and probably an 8m one in Landy. Unless Hall is coming on a short term deal of 2 years, not worth it

It could work. It will be tight, but it wouldn't stop me from going for it. The team should probably have a pretty good idea of what Landy and Makar will demand beforehand. If it's anything close to the below, then why not?

Keep in mind they can finagle a little more room by moving guys back and forth between the Avs and Eagles too.

2 Hall 9,000,000
