Definately, as 72 points in 82 games in 2018-2019 season and considered in Norris Award discussions that year. Played entire 2019-2020 season hurt so stats are misleading.
Last year you could easily make an argument. This year, he definitely wasn't. Still was one of the better offensive d-men in the league, but his defence was really bad. The fact that he was injured for a while and that he seemed to be playing hurt probably helped that. I think he'll probably be a consistent top 10 to 15 d-man in the league if he can improve his defence a bit.
If were talking about the 70point 20goal rielly yes he was last year. But in general no, top 10 yes, top 5 no as to many prospects are taking over the top 5.

YA, I'd say top ten overall, not top 5.

he's not even the best D-man on his own team, so no.
save last year's insane offensive season, Muzzin has been significantly better defensively while generating about 70-80% of the offence Rielly has. He's a better defender for sure unless Morgan shows he wasnt just a one year wonder with that offence.

Yes he is and has never had a decent partner. Give him health and his rightful spot on the #1 PP and more time in Keefe's system and he's going to win a Norris.
No, top five in the league for me is some combination of:
Josi
Hedman
Pietrangelo
Hamilton
Carlson
(Or something like that, lists are hard)
Rielly is very good, but he’s nowhere near any of those guys to me.
Yeah it's hard to put him as a definite top 5. There are 10-15 guys who are all close to each other and can have monster years. Any list of top defenceman and on any given night any of them could be the best on the ice. But all will be difference makers. everyone seems to forget just how good Rielly was when he wasn't healthy and saddled with Ceci.
Not right now he isn't. He might get there though. Unless guys like McAvoy, Makar, Hughes, Dahlin, Heiskanen, Sergachev, Provorov, Chabot and Fox pass him. Honestly a toss up depending on overall 2 way play, more offensively or defensively. Put it this way he's a great d-man. All of the guys I mentioned are great players and fantastic for their respective teams.

Muzzin is way better defencevly, but Rielly's offence is top 5 in the league.
