He's already a better player than Marchand. Especially at his age. He was on pace for back to back 40 goal seasons before he got hurt.
Marchand has never even cracked 40.
In Marchand's 25 and 24 year he put up 25 and 18 goals respectively. Given he was only 45 games in the 14 season.
It's not like he didn't have good line mates.

You know when Marchand's numbers took off. When Pasta took off.
Pasta break out year 16-17, also happens to be the year Marchands numbers jumped.

what about it?
You act like Jake doesn't play defense and Marchand is some world class defender.
Neither one of which is true.
Matter of fact the opposite is true.
Marchand barely throws a hit, far less than Jake anyway,
Marchand is in the - in his giveaway take away for 9 of his 11 years. Including his last 4 straight.
Jake has been a + in every single year in the league.

But you over here with your excuses trying to make up for the fact he doesn't net nearly as many goals.
Age over age statistics show without a doubt Jake is not only the better player at his age, but the better player now.

Hit/blocked shots/takeaways/giveaways aren't good stats to evaluate a player's defense. Ristolainen has 203 hits this season, yet he sucks.

And no, Guentzel isn't a disaster defensively.

If you compare stats

22yo
'16-17 Guentzel
'11-12 Marchand
Guentzel played half season; was the better player.

23yo
'17-18 Guentzel
'12-13 Marchand
Lock-out season in '12-13, Marchand still was the better player

24yo
'18-19 Guentzel
'13-14 Marchand
Guentzel was the better player

'19-20 Guentzel
'14-15 Marchand
Guentzel was better

To recap, now: Guentzel's better at scoring. Marchand assists/points, offense, defense, possession/puck-moving, PP, PK (yes I know Guentzel doesn't play on PK).

More context: Guentzel got Crosby who is better than Bergeron, especially at production. And all four years, PIT has been a top10 team

'11-12 BOS
3.17 GF/GP (3rd in league)
'16-17 PIT
3.39 GF/GP (1st in league)

'12-13 BOS
2.65 GF/GP (13th in league)
'17-18 PIT
3.29 GF/GP (4th in league)

'13-14 BOS
3.15 GF/GP (3rd in league)
'18-19 PIT
3.30 GF/GP (6th in league)

'14-15 BOS
2.55 GF/GP (23rd in league)
'19-20 PIT
3.20 GF/GP (10th in league)

He is a better player at same age but don't forget Guentzel always had better linemates to produce offensively and a better team.

Not saying he's done nothing and it's even the opposite he's a great+elite player but at the current time, Marchand is better.

For some reason, ACGM says you quoted me in your last two posts but I'll give my 2 cents here even though you didn't. I think giveaways and takeaways are a great indicator of defensive play as all the best defenders in the league will be found near the top of the league in takeaways and have a solid giveaway/takeaway ratio. I don't believe it should be the only thing taken into account at all and defensive play is certainly something you need to watch versus look at stats. Both are great defenders considering they play wing, probably the two most effective LWs at playing defense while producing at high levels offensively.

The linemate argument can't be used here since Marchand has had a significant jump in production since being put on, arguably, the best line in the league. Guentzel was Pitts best skater when Sid was hurt this year and while he has benefited from playing among great players, like Marchand, has proven hes great and both can be the best players on the ice (even with their linemates) at any given time.

Currently, Marchand is the better player by a slight margin but Guentzel is unbelievable and will be of the best wingers in the league for many years. He had 10 goals and 21 points in 12 (TWELVE!) playoff games at 23 years old, going back to the point of the original post, hes definitely elite. Fifth best LW in the league.

1) Ovechkin
2) Panarin
3) Huberdeau
4) Marchand
5) Guenztel

All these guys are so good though, they can be moved up or down and no one could really argue it

I don't have Ovechkin first, best scorer in history but I prefer complete players, thus having him at #3 for LW.

And as I said, Guentzel is one of the best LWs in the league, can't deny that.

Yup, was just giving my thoughts since ACGM brought me to your post. Only have Ovechkin 1st cause of what hes accomplished but I wouldn't pick him 1st if I was building a team to win a cup this year
