You have a defense that tied for third best in the League in goals against and you want to acquire a 35-year-old guy who's signed for five more years at an astronomical $8 million per year (minus the $1.25 retention) and who was one of the cornerstones of one of the worst defenses in the League?

The thing here is to improve the offense by adding a true offensive d-man who can give the puck to others every night.

Better options in FA, where you wouldnt have to lose a bunch of good pieces

Right however both Shattenkirk and Gustafsson (for instance) aren't as good as Burns

And you think in three years Burns will still be better than those guys?

What about Ristolainen or Montour from Buffalo? What about free agents from Tyson Barrie on down to Erik Gustafsson?

Risto isn't very good at offense and sucks even more at D than Burns and Montour isn't offensive at all

As for Barrie yeah fair enough but he'll likely as for more term that what Burns has left (5 years)

@ all of you,

Burns is a defensive liability. He turns the puck over a lot, and he had a rough year.

But don't forget he won the Norris just a few years ago and he was second in the voting for last year. He has declined, but he's still going to be an offensive threat for next year and more.

Also, don't forget that his 45 points (lowest point total since 2012-13 when he was hurt and played just 30 games) would be tied for the team-high on the Coyotes this year...

I hope the Canes target Demers and Raanta if those prices are true.

The Kings have no interest in Goligoski. They'll take Hjalmarsson though.

Additionally, that 3rd becomes a 2nd if Clifford re signs in Toronto. They're not trading it.

No, there’s no better options. There’s cheaper options and younger options but none are even close to Burns

Gustafsson in my opinion isn’t that great. Defensively liable and offense numbers went down. He’ll be the next Cam Barker and will be out of the league in a few years while Burns will still be playing at an above average level.

Arizona might be interested in Montour or Barrie, but they're both not quite the offensive powerhouses that Burns is (at least in his current state). You're looking at 4-5 million for Montour and 4.5-6 million for Barrie. If the Sharks retain around 1.5 million on Burns, I'd say it could be worth while. Also don't forget that Burns is made of steel and never gets hurt. Arizona has been plagued by injuries over the past few years, and I don't think they would mind having a guy who they know won't get hurt.
