You can safely bet that Mayfield wouldn't play on the first defensive pairing under Keefe!

I'm all for having him, mind you. He'd be useful, esp. on the PK. But Toronto fans and management don't like these 'stay-at-home' Ds. You can maybe swap him to third pairing.

The lineup is suboptimal, but I like the fact that you proposed specific draft picks.

Moving Boychuk or Leddy does it.

And if Boychuk is moved then Mayfield is a necessity.

I like Kapanen and think he'd be a nice fit in the Avs middle 6 and PK, but I'm not willing to pay a 1st for him in what is a deep 2020 draft.

Our 2020 1st will be a solid player who helps the team on an ELC in 2023 when Mackinnon and Byram are resigned, so I'm reluctant to move it at all.

I'd be more open with our 2021 1st, but Kapanen isn't the player I'd trade that pick for. This next offseason should also be a market that favours buying teams heavily due to the flat cap, so I think we can get a top 6/middle 6 forward for less than a 1st in a trade, or simply sign a comparable UFA (eg. Namestnikov).

I don’t think you’re ever going to find a scenario where Andreas Johnsson can fetch a d man worthy of the top pair with 3 years left on a deal under 2 million.

I would think that would be a ridiculously easy no from the islanders

The roster in this AGM looks really bad. Mayfield/Holl as the top 4 RHD's is really bad. And the bottom 6 forward group also looks really limited. Looks like a bubble team who get bounced by Boston in 5.

I don't see that at all. You'll have to let Dobson grow up someday and if neither Hutton nor Wilde are ready for third-pairing duty, there will be ample free agent RD's available for that slot.

Four of the bottom 6 are veterans, and with Toronto. Malgin and Robertson are youngsters with high upsides. You gotta let them start playing sometime.

Have you seen other Toronto constructions? Holl is uniformly opposite Muzzin, as he has been this season. And virtually all of them feature the newcomers Lehtonen or Liljegren opposite Rielly, so I don't begin to see how this structure is worse by comparison.

This is what Toronto has. I'm trying to make the best of it, without going the tired Kapanen-for-a-defenseman route.

Do you guys seriously think Mayfield is a top pair Dman? grimace

Also, note that I said Holl AND Mayfield as the top 4 RHD are bad. You can probably get away with one of them as your #4, but both is pushing it.

Mayfield doesn't get in over Marincin. He is not at all wanted.

You have got to be kidding. All those players are proven commodities, a 29th overal pick is a lottery ticket.

Just for the record, you put him on a top pair, i didn’t. You deemed him worthy of top pair minutes. I didn’t.

Trade value look alright @OldNYIfan
Maybe add a mid round pick to the Mayfield Trade, but other than that, looks okay.

Islanders would probably say no. I think based on pure ability, it’s about even, but with the money coming back to NYI it’s too much. Plus we have Wahlstrom and Bellows, who will hopefully play larger roles next season and round out the top-9. Both of them still on ELCs too. And I’ll say what everyone else is saying: If Mayfield is on your top pair, you’re screwed. He stepped up after Pelech got hurt, but our defense dropped off big time after that, for a number of reasons.

I think Kapanen would net more in a trade and thus think he’s the one you should move for a defenseman, or flip that first rounder for one. Not sure who would be available. I do like Colin Miller a lot (Johnsson might fetch him tbh), but I know Leafs fans aren’t keen on him. Connor Murphy has been discussed at length, as has Josh Manson. Jason Demers is a sneaky one - Arizona needs to clear cap space and he only has a year left. Not a guy you’d trade Kappy for but a good target nonetheless.

Dobson is 3rd pair next year. bode has been injured all year and not ready, Hutton is 3rd pair at best. Mayfield is needed for the top 4 next year.
