So my last post was if everything stood pat going into the flat cap (post titled "flat cap"), kind of going over how Chicago isnt in too much of a cap crunch. This post is going to be a more nuclear approach in the likely scenario they do not land Lafreniere, and for simplicity's sake im not going to worry about who they could draft this year as well.
If you are curious about the mindset behind my signings and the trades I do not describe, feel free to look at my last post and as always, I would love your feedback on them.
Trade 1 : In my mind, there are 2 good landing spots for Strome, MIN and WPG, both places that are looking for a solid 2nd line center. I think the MIN trade just makes more sense, because there is the obvious target of Brodin, whereas with WPG you would have to get a little bit more creative in trying to get fair value back.
Trade 2 : So I've seen Saad underrated and overrated on this site, and while I am not going to comment on what I think his value SHOULD be, I am going to make a comparable to another trade that recently occured, that being the Jason Zucker trade. They have been very similar in production the past couple of years, with Saad having slightly more goals the past 2 years and Zucker having slightly more assists over that time. Saad is a year younger, but a big thing from that trade was Zucker's contract security, so for Saad to have that kind of value, we would likely have to guarantee he has a contract in place, lets say something like a 5x5. Mittelstadt is a reclamation project with a chance he still turns into a good forward in the NHL and Weissbach is a lotto ticket and we get a late 1st or early 2nd.
Trading these two gives us room to let the kids play a little, and if we flop, we flop into the lottery and the kids get some more experience and we are able to bounce back better next season.
Carpenter is traded so he gets consistent playing time somewhere, figure he deserves it.
If we can fit under the cap like this, we dont have to buyout Smith because he contract expires next year so there isnt the biggest need there unless someone is willing to trade for him and give us like a 4th back.
that's a no from the penguins.
They aren't trading away good young players with low cap hits for an OK one on a high cap hit in the flat cap world. Or ever.

I tried my best to mirror the Zucker trade at the deadline, but that makes sense, would someone else fit there instead of ZAR?
Imo Saad to Pens doesn't work since they don't have the money.
You could get a lot better return for Saad if he's half retained from some other team. Although I don't think there's going to be many, if at all sign-and-trade kind of moves due to the forthcoming expansion draft, as it forces one to protect the said asset.

That's an important part as Saad would have to be protected in the expansion draft if a team makes a trade for him or else why do it?

other teams I was thinking about were EDM and Boston. Think Boston would work better due to potentially more options for taking cap back to help them out a little bit more. I just used pittsburgh because of the direct comparable but yeah might not work as good there

dude where are the penguins getting 6 million from for a winger?
Yeah an barely pay their own, they have to move Bjugstad just to make that happen.
They are cap strapped for the next 2 years. Their only saving grace is they will have mostly everybody locked up and get some relief from the expansion draft to make room for Marino's contract. If they don't get relief there....they are screwed.

By default, acquiring any player with one year deal should only be considered a rental strengthening as of now due to the abnormal situation regarding the ED and salary cap.

gotcha, might edit that to a different team. Thanks for feedback

Rumors swirling about a flat cap or only $1.5M increase in the next 2 seasons combined. All depends on the players associations negotiations in terms of escrow and revenue shares. Not looking good is the latest.

Both of those teams are very cap strapped as well...don't think either can take assets without dumping some to CHI.
Then again I could see both teams moving Moore+2021 1st or Russell+2021 1st for Saad near the deadline...that's assuming these teams are keeping those assets until the next deadline, which is probably held near the next April or something like that.

Yeah but he explained with an extension in place prior to the trade....that changes things dramatically.
If thats all we can get for saad I would rather just keep him. Pens just don't make sense as a landing spot to me because they are cap-strapped. I think value wise we should get more back for saad or extend him. Maybe Hallander and a 2nd that upgrades to a 1st if saad extends. Thats more in the ballpark of what I would be willing to move him for and That models the Tofolli to VAN deal (2nd and a prospect). As mentioned before I think other teams make more sense as trade partners than PIT

lot of teams are going to be tight against the cap. And that's if they play, they still haven't hit the ice yet. If they don't. If they have to cancel. that's gonna hurt.
I see a lot of expensive vets getting the door if they aren't taking lower deals. 34+ crowd is about to have an early retirement. Some younger min salary guys gonna get the nod.
Teams just don't have the cap space for the salary inflation they are having. I don't see many other ways for a few teams but to play rookies and try to shed cap.

I switched it up to Saad to the Isles, who have a little bit more cap space, what do you think.

At which point they will have to revisit the CBO discussion. They aren't going to screw over the older vets is my guess which is to your point what will happen.

they don't have to screw them over, just not offer them a contract. Teams can move on. production in the 34+ range ain't great to being with and the league keeps getting younger.
Just going to increase that pace.

Don't think it's just the 34+ crowd...those guys don't get big contracts anyway....think it will have a bigger impact on players in the 29 to 32 age range trying to get a new deal....those guys get screwed. Take Hall for example....going on 29 what is he worth then and how much term? More so Hoffman going on 31, what's he worth and for how long?

I haven't seen enough of Bellows to know to be honest. He's not played many NHL games. But that looks like a huge ask if he's progressing well. It's basically 2 1sts and a 2nd. I don't think you are going to get that for Saad.
I mean Kessel got a conditional 1st, a 1st prospect, and some pieces parts that at the time were more about cap space.
And he was a 80pt player.
Isles have no cap, they need to dump contracts and that is too much for Saad.
I mean, Wilde is pretty blocked off from cracking the top 4 unless Dobson busts, which isnt likely at this point, and Bellows is another reclamation project at this point. But thats a fair point on the cap.

Bellows is not reclamation, he needed time to develop and looked good this year. He is ready to make the jump full time.
Wilde gets moved to help dump Ladd or Boychuk contracts.
