Yes Marino looks like he is going to be a good one. We had no chance though since he refused to sign a contract

I hate the college kids are able to do that. Capitals lost priskie to a similar situation

Yeah , I disagree with the way college draft picks can elect for free agency and select their destination. A CHL kid has to sign or they go back in the draft. It’s just seems flawed to me

It makes no sense at all. A CHL kid elects not to sign, re-enters the draft and and essentially every time is selected lower than he was originally, which means they’ll get less on their ELC. A college kid doesn’t have to sign, can pick their destination and get a bonus laden ELC.

If the Oilers hadn’t traded Marino, he’d likely be in the AHL with mediocre stats.

My statement is not being salty or anything, by the way. It’s more the lack of opportunity he would’ve gotten in Bakersfield had they signed him.

no he wouldn't really. Penguins weren't expecting him to play this good. Many mock rosters prior to the start of the season at best had him playing third pairing. he shined in training camp which he would have done here too

So if that’s the case Kemp is the perfect replacement as he had the exact same stats in the same NCAA division and league, why even need Marino? They’re nearly identical players from all parts of the spectrum. Besides that, Pittsburgh’s RD wasn’t strong (Schultz, Letang, Gudbranson, and Ruhwedel), which is why Marino was talked about in preseason. Even with that it still took Schultz to get injured for Marino to get his big break. Edmonton’s RD depth was pretty strong with Larsson, Benning, Bear, Persson, Bouchard, and Day (at the time). As much as I wished the Oilers signed in hindsight, the outcome would likely be much different and the same will likely be said for Kemp.

I wouldn't count it as strong at the time . Larsson was the only one that had played huge mintues. benning is at best a number 5 dman, bear , persson were unproven and bouchard still needed a year and day isn't even close to being a nhl player
I feel like kemp is gonna leave
