Domi for 8

Description
These are all the players from the 2013-2015 draft (23-25yrs old) that I believe are worth the 8th overall pick and are not considered "superstars", but elite. I have their ppg over the past 2 seasons and average GAR%/xGAR% percentile among forwards over the past two seasons. As a Sabres fan, I think Reinhart is a good reference point. From this list, the only ones that may be available are Domi, Ehlers, Cirelli. This list in my opinion proves that Domi belongs in this elite group of top 6 forwards and is worth 8th overall.

Monahan .88 2013 79.3%
Lindholm .87 2013 89.7%
Larkin .86 2014 89.3%
Boeser .80 2015 84.4%
Meier .78 2015 89.2%
Mantha .78 2013 85.8%
Reinhart .76 2014 87.9%
Domi .76 2013 88.5%
Horvat .75 2013 75%
Konecny .74 2015 89.1%
Ehlers .71 2014 90.1%
Strome .70 2015 78.3%
Nylander .70 2014 83.6%
Cirelli .55 2015 96.4%

-For anyone thinking they would rather have the 8th overall, look at that forward group and specifically top 6 and tell me that isn't mouth watering.
-Domi starts at C, Cozens takes off-hand faceoffs and is eventually groomed into the position. I think he is capable of starting on the second line, but he will get some pressure taken off of him at wing, especially playing with 2 really good, fast skating transition forwards like Skins and Domi
-Putting Mitts at 3C with two talented wingers will be a good test for him, if he can't succeed with these two, he likely never will. If he still isn't part of our long term plans, the worst this could do is increase his trade value for a future RD or something
-Brodie might be an overpay, but his analytics are great and he is the perfect 2nd pairing bridge for Samuelsson/Johnson and wont let the Sabres rush their development
-1 year deal for Montour, he either proves he can be a part of this core or we move on, simple as that. But I think he deserves one more chance
-I have no clue what to do with backup goalie, we gotta either buy out Hutton and find a cheap guy or roll with him. Maybe toss him in with retained salary in the Dallas trade bc they are losing Khudobin and try to find someone else

I like this roster, and I agree a few other posters.

Larsson is a bit overpaid. Olofsson is a bit underpaid for the term.

I would also trade Montour and bring up Borgen or another d prospect to fill the 3RD -- that will help with the cap issues too and allow you to fill out a full 23-man roster as opposed to 21 like you have now.

True, Borgen is the most intriguing defenseman we have because he is NHL ready. I want one more year of Montour because we paid such a high price for him and we would be selling low. But yes Borgen deserves a shot

Fair point. For me, I think the only one is Rossi, who is arguably already NHL ready. Holtz and Raymond are intriguing but they are gonna take some years of development, both have pretty small frames and were barely SHL ready last year. If the pick would be Lundell, I say trade it even though I like him as a player. I think Perfetti is a horrible fit in Buffalo and I probably wouldn't consider him at any spot.

I don’t look at whether Rossi or Raymond are ready for the NHL, I think it’s a great luck if one of them is at #8 and we have to pick one of them. I don’t think that it’s very difficult to find 2C, it’s just that we had such a bad GM that for two years he didn’t even understand what to find 2C, although during this time there were trades of dozens different centers at different prices.

This deal doesn't mean you can't swing one for a good LD or something. Romanov will be solid, Mete is solid, all you need is a solid free agent signing to shore that up

If we’re talking the next 2 seasons, we have Chiarot. If we’re talking about after that we have Harris, Norlinder, and Struble.

True, Larsson will likely cost less, but at least that gives us less of a cap hit in this model and doesn't effect the overall structure of the team. My whole point is pretty much resign him no matter what bc his game is exactly what this team needs

I would like to resign him. But not no matter what. He can help this team, but what this team needs is more goals. They have been deficient in that area for years. If the had average overall or better goaltending this year they would have been among the better teams in the league in GA

I was approaching that comment as the Sabres in general not on this particular AGM team
Lol.

I like this trade for habs. Yes Domi has played well, but Montreal is a bubble team in the Atlantic every year with With Boston, Tampa, Toronto trio, with Florida having a bad year (i blame Bobrosky). Montreal will then have pick 8 & 9 (If miss playoffs and doesn't get lucky in lottery), and can get 2 quality young players, let them develop for a year, then bring up all the kids in 2021-22 season.

So we're helping a divisional rival for the next 6 years to draft a guy we hope will become as good as him (In two years from now) just because we're not a good team next year? With the amount of missed first rounders by Montreal I wouldn't bank on that 8OA to become anything (Good or bad) as of now. If Domi's traded it clearly can't be to a Atlantic team that'll battle for the same playoff spots because you're just shooting yourself in the foot and then wonder three years later why you're still limping.

Well done!

Personally I think some of the signings are a bit high - losing teams shouldn't have to give out big money long term deals to underperforming RFA's - but its always better to err on the safe side.

I would love to get Risto but you would need to ask for players in a trade scenario. The Stars' prospect pool is thin and we did not had 2nd and 3rd round picks in 2019 and 2020 if Nill does not make any trade from here to the Draft.
