Find a way to work around it until the contracts expire.
Most teams have this problem.

The Islanders have the worst cap situation in the league. The moment they look like they may have some blue sky, they have several guys who will likely be declining with term. They are so screwed. Get out from Ladd, Boychuk and Komarov, and now you have Eberle, Lee, Nelson and Pageau with term and all in their early to mid 30's. Lou has buried this team.

I agree, i got rid of all those cap dumps for free and still traded Leddy for picks and i barely have 10 mill to work with to sign future RFAs

There's no really easy way to say this, but if they were all in the same horse and carriage "accident", and had concussions at the same time, you could just fill up the 'ol LTIR...

On a serious note though, I have no idea how Lou was planning to trade Ladd and whatever else for Parise...how the heck do you do that and still make the cap work to keep Pulock and Barzal?!?!

Convince the league to allow Seattle to join ASAP so they can save you?

And then look at the next wave of guys making even more money and have huge term into their 30's. Its a 5 year ****show there that will make Tampa's situation look like a cake walk. Lee for instance, how would you even move him now? 7 million dollars for a 50 point winger? He's signed through to age 37!

I look at the Leafs long term cap situation and then look at the Islanders or Tampa, and I am pretty happy with my GM. The team still needs to figure things out and have to do it on a budget but they have all the necessary framework and zero bad deals to deal with. Ottawa would be wise to not add anymore bad deals to their roster. They are in a perfect position to manage their future cap without problems as long as they don't overpay depth guys.

Sad part is tearing it down and doing a rebuild isn’t really an option given the term on current contracts. I really don’t know but am tempted in trying to make an islanders team

My opinion:

Boychuk - 1st round pick (Top 10 protected?) and Bode Wilde but you get a 3rd rounder back
Ladd - You're stuck with him
Komarov doesn't have a contract that'd hard to move - With 35-50% retention you may get a late pick for him otherwise you'd have to send mid picks or a B-prospect for someone to grab him
I'd say Clutter's about the same as Komarov - With 35-50% retention you could get a late pick back otherwise you'd have to send a 2nd and a b-prospect to get rid of him.
Hickey's only 1.45M$ buried, just leave him there, no need to lose assets for such small savings.

But yeah clearly something's not right with Lou's plan because you can't have so many bad signings in such a short amount of time and stay competitive. Also other than Sorokin and Dobson their pipeline isn't looking great, add this to the fact you don't have a 2020 1st, 2nd and 2021 2nd .... That's rough.

Good luck! It hurts the face... just give up everything to shed all of laad’s contract. Varlamov Lehner move still just blows me away.

Talked a lot about this before. Only guys that need to be traded, in my mind, are Leddy and Komarov. Boychuk should be bought out, despite the minimal salary relief, Ladd to the AHL and Hickey in the lineup, assuming he’s healthy. Barzal at $7.250 x 3, Toews and $4.250 x 4/5 and Pulock at $6 x 6. Lineup is:

27-13-7
18-29-26
20-44-12
32-53-15

3-6
25-8
4-24

Assuming no retention on Leddy or Komarov, it will all fit with a flat cap

Ladd to the AHL saves about 100,000 only. Still on the hook for all his cap except 1.075m and then you have to replace him with at 975,000 player. If your top offer to Barzel ins 7.250 X3, that could really be offer sheet material for a team.

Why isn’t it ~$1 million? Don’t buried contracts get more relief than that?

And I’m using Point, Tkachuk and to a certain extent DeBrincat (never went RFA, so it’s a bit different) as comparables. I think Point is better than Barzal and Tkachuk is probably his equal. I just can’t see him getting significantly more than either of them, especially with a flat cap. For that reason, I don’t see an offer sheet coming.

No buried contracts don't much cap relief. In effect it's a cap wash when the player is replaced by a 4th liner. Thing about 3 year deal, it only leaves only year more till UFA. IMO Tzachuk took 7m X 3...and he will go to arbitration in for his final year...and then be a UFA. Lets' say Barzel signs a 8.5 X 5 offer sheet, can the Isles afford that?

He hit a homerun with Trotz and they've been really good but I also think very flawed and very lucky. They did operate with goalies performing way above the league average for well over a year and that I think masked their problems skill wise. Long term, I have no idea what they are going to do.
