I have no idea if this is a good trade. I'm a Panthers fan so there might be some bias in here.

All in all, I think it would be a good trade for both teams. Montreal's defence is aging, even though there are young guys coming up. Petry and Weber aren't gonna last forever. Matheson has 6 years in his contract and is 26 years old. Also Connolly is a nice sweetener as you can expect him to score at least 20 goals every year.

Connolly and Matheson would bring stability to the Canadiens who have to sign almost everyone in the coming years. Both have years left on their deals. Also both would be good additions to Montreal's below average offense.

As for Panthers perspective, Domi is a great second line center. They would have to sign him because he is an RFA but I wouldn't think that's too difficult.

Salary cap wise I don't think either team really cares. Both teams have a lot of room to wiggle so I don't believe Montreal taking a few million extra would be a big deal. Florida has the space to retain something if needed, though.

If the Habs didn’t have so much cap space, they would decline. But they have tons. I think this trade is much better for Montreal than it is for Florida. Habs accept. Honestly, I have no idea what the Panthers would do. Up to Tallon

Montreal rejects. We don’t need to trade Domi, so we’re only trading him if what we’re getting back is worth it and fits our needs. While we have cap space now, we don’t have that luxury next year, so we can’t afford to add unnecessary contracts.

Matheson’s contract is too long, and plays in a position of strength of LHD. You said we might need to replace Petry/Weber, which we 100% need to do. But to replace them we need a RHD, and we probably need to draft them, since no one’s going to be willing to trade a player of that caliber.

As for Connolly, we would be mildly interested, if not for his contract. His contract is way too long, and would end up costing us one of our top UFAs in free agency next year. Plus we have enough depth on the wing that we don’t need him.

So neither of these pieces interest the habs, meaning you’re definitely not getting Domi.
