Description
Detroit might be the biggest loser of the recent draft. Instead of having the biggest chance of getting a generational talent they fall 3 position only to get 4th overall. The good news is that this draft is depth but the player they'll get won't help them right away. Here is what I would do I was in Yzerman shoes.

First with the 4th overall draft I would choose Rossi. On previous agm's I've said Lafreniere, Byfield and Stuztle would already be picked, so Detroit will take the best player. I could be wrong though as Yzerman has proved he can surprise people just like last year when he took Seider. It's hard to go against him, maybe he knows a thing or two about players that make him do his choice, but I think Rossi is going to Detroit.

Next up the rfa. Mantha, Bertuzzi, Fabbri are locks to get extansion except if Yzerman receives a offer he can't refuse so the first two signs long term contract. For Fabbri I think the best option would be a bridge contract. He got a good bounce-back season last year but it's his first good season where he didn't got a major injury. The best thing would be to play it safe, a short contract take will take him to ufa and see where it takes it.

For the ufa I don't think many players will go to Detroit since they're in full rebuild and I expect this team to still finish in the bottom of the standings next season. One move they could make would be to add another goaltender. Howard will walk and Bernier did a good job considering the defense in front of him, but they could add another fridge starter to make a 1a-1b tandem. They choice would be Talbot why? I remember a article where he said he thinks he still could be a #1 goaltender. The best teams already got a goaltender in place and what better team then Detroit to prove if he's right or wrong. The only player they could consider signing if he becomes available is Krug. He's from Michigan and grew up as a Wings fan. However I don't think Boston let him go that easily, but if that's the case Detroit should be all over him.

I don't think they make any major trade as they'll likely hope for improvment from within the team. One full season of Mantha, Zadina will be a full time nhler, the arrival of Seider and better goaltending from Talbot instead of Howard and this team will be better then last year (it won't be too hard). Yzerman said he wouldn't trade picks for a short time solution and that's the way I also see things. The only way I would trade it would be for a young player that adresses the needs. If not just keeps your picks and let your players develop.

I actually think Detroit will be able to sign some decent UFA's cause so few teams have any cap space and the Wings should grab a few good UFA's that can help when some of the youngsters mature and they start pulling out of the rebuild, I think they should sign a top 4 dman, a decent depth #5/6/7 type dman and a decent 3rd line forward, they could really use a stopgap 2C but that's not easy to find.

It's really ****ty that they didn't get Lafreniere, really hope they draft a forward with the 4th overall pick and don't use it on Drysdale.

I think this needs to be a big offseason for Yzerman, there needs to be some kind of improvement next season, can't stay rebuilding forever.

I also thought of bringing new talents since they have capspace, but as I said I don't think they will be many players that will want to play in Detroit because they were so bad last season.

I also thought on making some trades with teams that are strapped with the cap like Tampa (old Yzerman team) but most of the players have NTC which will make it difficult which is why I didn't make trades. Plus Yzerman said he didn't want to moves picks since he plays to keep them for the rebuild.

My only fault is with Bowey getting a large raise and an extra year of term--he is arbitration eligible so he could elect to take the team to arbitration but then the Wings get to select the 1 year term (the vice versa is true too). But remember Bowey was waived by the Wings not too long ago. He is error prone defensively and has yet to show any real sustained offense at his position. Gustav Lindstrom, Dennis Cholowski, and Moritz Seider have all but passed him on the depth chart. Add in DeKeyser, Hronek, and Nemeth and you see Bowey is the 6th/7th d-man. Those guys do not get $2M/yr and neither should he.

Right now the Wings have the 2nd most cap space available (approx 35.240M with 14 players under contract though Z's contract will go on LTIR unless traded). The Edmonton Journal just published an article yesterday on how bad of a year it is to be an NHL free agent--for example Edmonton has 7M left for 5 players including possibly re-signing Mike Smith and Mike Green. And Edmonton isn't even the worst squeezed team--that honor goes to Toronto which has 4.59M to sign 7 players including Travis Dermott, Tyson Barrie, Codi Ceci, and Jeremy Bracco who is no longer waiver exempt (or you could say Phoenix who has 1.5M and needs 7 players including Taylor Hall--but does have LTIR credits). Not many teams have any money to spend as they will struggle to qualify their RFA's because of the stagnant cap. Players may not be thrilled to come to a rebuilding town--but unless they are willing to take a significantly reduced salary, sit out, or go to the KHL to collect a paycheck they will sign with any team that has cap room.

You're thinking the wrong way. The other teams will want Detroit to take on a player's bad contract like the 'Canes did to take on Patrick Marleau's contract from the Leafs last year (gave up a 6th got Marleau, conditional 1st, and 7th). Don't be surprised when players say for illustration like Niklas Hjalmarsson suddenly become Wings or if Z's corpse of a contract is moved.

I think--no hope--that Abdelkader will be buried in the minors. Not for the cap savings, but for a roster spot for one of the young forward prospects. Detroit has several players that are younger and deserve a prolonged look to see if they are part of the future.
