Big Moves

Created by: SamG
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2020
Published: Jul. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Ottawa makes a big splash on draft day, acquiring Jack Eichel from Buffalo. The Sabres new GM decides to move past the Eichel era, using the 3rd overall pick to select their new franchise center Quinton Byfield.

2. The Islanders move Pulock due to cap issues. With Dobson and Wilde on the way, the Islanders decide getting Barzal locked up is first priority. Two 2nd round picks helps restock the Islanders prospect pool in a deep draft, Lassi Thomson adds a solid RD prospect to their system, and Chlapik would be a great low-cost roster players.

3. Draft Marco Rossi with the San Jose pick. He may be able to make it as a center in the NHL but I think he would be a fantastic, play driving LW. Ready to make the jump to the NHL especially if he's playing as a winger.

4. Chabot - JBD becomes the Sens best pairing. They'll be used on everything from PP to PK.

5. Anisimov, Ryan, and Zaitsev spend most of the time in the press box or playing very limited minutes.

Not keeping 3 and 5 in 2020 if there are plans on acquiring Eichel. The package here is an easy no imo. Tierney doesn’t move the needle on a full rebuild, Pinto is ok, a goalie prospect doesn’t move the needle either then throwing on the 2nd and 3rd picks screams quantity over quality.

Byfield is not going to be there at 5 for Sabres to pick will want #3 the San Jose pick to start with then #5, Tkachuk and Brannstrom then you have the Sabres attention. Short of that the Sabres agree to hang up the phone if Dorion mentions the name Eichel ever again.

There's 0 chance of Byfield falling to #5, Say LA takes Tim Stutzle at #2 Ottawa takes Marco Rossi at #3 and then Detroit takes Quinton Byfield at #4 Buffalo declines that deal anyways. So it's a moot point.

Sabres decline. They probably want someone like Tkachuk too. Which Ottawa definitely won't do. Any Eichel trade is impossible IMO, simply because Buffalo wants a couple of high end players and high draft picks, which is too much to give up for the other team

Well, if you read the description, you'd know he simply selected the wrong 1st rd pick. He's talking about Sabres using the #3 pick on Byfield, so he obviously meant the SJS pick.

Yeah he added the wrong pick to the Eichel trade, Should be the Shark pick not Ottawa's own pick that's what is confusing here is he added the wrong pick to the deal.

Whoops I mixed up the Ottawa/San Jose pick, meant for it to be the higher of the two.

You do understand star players never get a full return when traded right? Getting a guaranteed third overall pick is probably the best piece your ever going to get for Eichel. So the alternative is staying the course and hoping the team improves, but if they don't then you're looking at trading a disgruntled player who's 2+ years older then he is right now. I'm not saying Buffalo should do this, I'm suggesting that maybe the new GM doesn't want to work under the shadow of having to appease Eichel.

Appeasing Eichel comes by putting together a competitive team which is the same shadow all pro sports GM's work under.

Hard to do if the new GM doesn't feel like the current core is close to competing.

He shouldn't have taken the job if he didn't. He has been in the organization for 10 years and is aware of the expectations of the fans, ownership and top players on the team. If he doesn't feel like they are close he was accepting a job with a sense that he was destined to fail
