The Leafs are fine Everyone hold your horses

Created by: Russell_C
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2020
Published: Jul. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-Resign Clifford
- Engvall can rotate through bottom 6 LW & RW to give people rest/ injuries
Robertson plays with JT & Marner,
If not:
Hyman-Mathews-Nylander
Miky-Tavares-Marner
Engvall-Kerfoot-Kappy
Clifford-Spezza-Barabanov

As for the D
-Rielly-(Either Dermott or Lehtonen)
-Muzzin-Holl (Shutdown)
-Sandin- (Dermott or Lehtonen)

I personally like the idea of Dermott developing into a top 4 RD IF POSSIBLE, play him with Rielly so there's a Vet and an up and comer. Then Sandin plays with Lehtonen, again, Vet and Up and comer. If either Dermott doesn't prove himself or Lehtonen proves he deserves an increased role, Rielly-Lehtonen, Muzz-Holl, Sandin-Dermott

Have to play Lehtonen and Barabanov out of camp, free agents in the future want to see past free agents get a fair shake after signing in TO from overseas. Otherwise it will be tough to sign free agents and fill out the roster in the future.

Let me know what you think, I'm of the opinion that the sky if falling leafs defense opinion is a bit over-hyped. We all need to stop trading for Dumba, Murphy, Montour & Savard and stop signing Petro or trading Nylander when trying to be realistic.

OH, everyone in LTIR are just depth/injury callups- no order

What would you change?

I really like Clifford, but I don't know if resigning him is worth changing that third to a second. They can probably pick up someone who brings the same kind of thing through FA this summer.

Do you think his "toughness"/ "grit" is worth signing? I like the idea of having someone who can punch a Bruin in he face WHEN need be in the playoffs. Other than Clifford, Kappy has shown he can get a bit rough and fight, but it drops off pretty bad after that. Not enough face punching ability on this team as it is.

Kap can't fight there is plenty of evidence of that on hockeyfights too so lets just stop that nonsense. The last thing he should be doing is dropping gloves.

And this defense sucks.
This is the kind of defense you get by someone just putting names down on a piece of paper.
5 Left handed guys. There goes your teams ability to actually play hockey. No point to point passes, teams will be all over you forcing mistakes.

I'm not too sold on Barbie, if he doesn't shine in the pre-season I say he invokes his European clause and goes back to the KHL, especially with the covid19 happening, players might wanna stay closer to home and players in the KHL have less travel in their season.

The best 6 D-Corps the Leafs had only two RDH; I'm talking about Ellett, Gill, McCoun, Mironov, Rouse, Lebreve.

The Leafs can probably easily navigate this offseason, if they are fine with their D. All they would need to do is find a place for Johnsson , just like you did.

Where it becomes interesting is the following offseason.

How do you extend Andersen and Hyman with a flat cap of 81.5, then the next season at 82.5 what does a Rielly extension look like?

Vegas rolled out 5 LHD, Yotes rolled out 5 LHD - I see no reason this Defense gets decimated on a nightly basis - everything you said about this Defense is nonsense

Probably not extending those 2 - Hyman if he's willing to take a Brandon Tanev deal can be done - as for Freddie I'm fairly confident there is no intention to extend him - most likely roll out Campbell and another borderline starter 40 games each

the Yotes...you mean the team that couldn't generate any offense. Yeah kind of hard to score when you can't move the puck point to point.

We can move Kappy and Kerfoot to open up ~6.5-7m as the years go on, which could theoretically open up Andersen for ~8m and hyman for ~6 or so? I've heard some back and forth as to weather or not Andersen should be signed at all, but if we were to resign him, maybe something like 4x7.5m? just a 2.5m raise? Hyman IDK, he is so underrated and such a pitbull he could easily bring in 4-5 somewhere on the open market i think. Slight over-payment but someone would do it.

Pretty damned close to same production that's for sure, despite the small sample size over 3 or so years. But Kerfoot plays center and we have plenty of wingers, Not that Kerfoot is unbeatable.

Johnsson has 60 point potential beside matthews and nylander. Hes their best LW'er. Kerfoot is a 3c and nothing more

So could Hyman or Miky, I think even Engvall could put up numbers like Johnsson has so far if he was playing with Matthews & Nylander

Johnsson is just as good offensively and not a defensive liability

Average PK time over the last 3 years:
2017-19
Hyman: 2 mins 39 secs
Johnsson: 0 mins 43 secs

2018-19
Hyman: 2 mins 16 secs
Johnsson 0 mins 1 sec

2019-20
Hyman: 1 min 52 secs
Johnsson: 0 mins 13 secs
Miky: 1 mins 55 secs

Hyman and Miky are trusted more in defensive situations

Team really doesn't matter, just a cap dump. But is it for cap reasons, disliking the player or to pricey
