Detroit would probably accept that trade. Bernier with 50% salary retention for a 2021 Vegas 2nd.

Two reasons I would hesitate:
1) they don't have any prospect or backup goalie close to being able to take on the #1 job in 2021-22. He had a .919 save percentage and 2.65 GAA from mid-December onward in front of an AHL defense (minus Hronek) and actually kept them from getting blown out every night.
2) they are getting to the point where they've had so many 2nd-3rd round picks (Vegas 2nd is going to be low 2nd round pick) recently that the 50 contract rule has become an issue (they had 5 in 2017, 5 in 2018, 4 last year, 5 this year, 4 next year)--but they can always bundle picks so yeah still think they'd do that deal.

Detroit would do this a 2nd for Bernier. Realistically would Vegas give up a 2nd for a 32 yr old goalie from Detroit after the Tatar trade?

Not that I want him to go but value's there so ... Agree with you on this one. Makes sense for Vegas as there's a connection with Pacc.

Bernier is in the last year of his contract and the TDL takes place with about 20 games left in the season. Salary retained in a trade after the season has started and before it ends is prorated. A 50% retention on Bernier traded at the TDL would be around $731,707 and since his contract in its last season that is all Detroit is on the hook for.

Interesting but bernier played very well for our horrid team...so we need CONDITIONAL 1st rd pick on that base 2nd rounder..so if he works out for vgk as expected we get a top pick for his services..& make it a 2022 pick instead

Montréal accepts, as long as they’re sure Phil will re-sign with them, and that he wants a chance at a Stanley Cup. And oh man would that 1st Line be a nightmare for opposing teams.

Looking at the 50/90 rule, I'm not sure DET has to worry about the 50 contract limit, they'll be losing FAs, they won't sign everyone off their 90 man reserve list, so barring an unprecedented draft success from 2017-today, the 50 is not in danger. Of their 22 reserved picks, 4 are already not going to be signed (Kotkansalo, Kadeykin, Rybar and JVP), and many of the others are in college with 2023 or 2024 dates on them. Of the 5 that are coming due in 2021, 2 are Nos, 2 are maybes, and 1 is a yes (Petruzzelli). Still plenty of room to roll the dice.

These moves are slanted in the other teams favor and don't really address the team's needs. Moving Tuch to sign Montour for 2 years, and renting Danault and Bernier for all those picks plus Elvenes just doesn't make sense for Vegas.
