Best draft for OTT

Created by: arafay
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 5, 2020
Published: Jul. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The sens have plenty of high end forward prospects. With reports of LA leaning towards stutzle, Byfeild fulfills the need of a true future 1C for the sens.
Now, Detroit takes perfetti at 4. Do you go for Raymond or drysdale? I say drysdale. Getting a true top pairing rd in the draft is hard. Even next year, it looks like Brandt Clarke is the only guy who is going to be near where the sens pick (top 5) next year. So I think Ottawa goes in a secured rd, since forwards should be available in coming years.
Finally, the 2nds are now redundant to the sens prospect pool. However, askarov would be the de facto #1 in future years. I think the sens move up for him. They could just as well stay and draft a future too 6 forward, but that isn’t the point if this team. Therefore, this is what I would do at the draft considering la takes stutzle and Detroit takes perfetti.
3 OA - Quinton Byfield
5 OA - Jamie Drysdale
14 OA - Yaroslav Askarov

I can make the edm trade chlapik or Paul, whichever edm fans prefer.

All of these moves either save melnyk money stay about the same. I really think baertschi can bounce back and return something at the tdl. Duclair is also likely gone at the tdl, though I see him staying if he gets some consistency in his game. Russel and Nilsson likely gone at tdl as well

This would be pretty good but id pass on Askarov and take a winger like Mercer/Quinn/Jarvis. I dont want to pay Askarov the Vasi contract if he pans out

Quinton Byfield is nowhere near NHL ready, He'll need at least 1-2 years more of juniors just because of his age.

Nailed the draft. Ottawa has the potential to draft a #1C, a #1D, and a #1 goalie in the same draft. That is franchise altering

Make it Neal > Russell, Chlapik > Paul, and a 2020 3rd instead of 2021 and god willing, most Oilers fans would absolutely struggle to say no.

Take Raymond or Rossi, (or Lundell) both>>Drysdale, and even if there aren't many RHD available next year, there are tons of Drysdale caliber (and better) LHD... imagine a 1-2 LHD of Hreschuk-Chabot or smth... I don't think it really matters who the RHD are with them, especially when you already have Thompson Zub JBD etc...

If askarov gets to vasi level, this will be a top team in the nhl for years (and I have to think will have at least 1 cup in its fortunes). I take paying him that than potentially not having a starter and being the same mediocre sens of the karlsson era (save for that ecf run)

The reason I took Russel was that he is paid the same amount as Reilly after bonuses are paid (which is why it has to also be after the draft). Sure can be chlapik instead of Paul no problem.

Jp and Russel for chlapik, Reilly, and a 3rd (which will be very early) has to at least be considered no?

The problem I personally have with it is that I think Puljujarvi has a fair bit more value than Chlapik and a 3rd. Russell for Reilly is effectively a wash given the financials: one should argue that Ottawa is actually robbing Edmonton and benefitting substantially by hitting the cap floor and getting the better defenceman, despite Edmonton being the benefactor of immediate cap relief.

This trade involves selling low on Puljujarvi with the perception that his value is being used to offload Russell's deal.

This is why I suggested taking Neal instead of Russell: the additional term and higher hit (which neither genuinely affects the Senators for the remainder of Neal's deal) does bridge the gap in value. I think if the idea is to pursue Russell strictly for the financial aspect, I'd hope that both Chlapik and the 3rd round pick would both be upgraded to something akin to Abramov and the Stars' 2nd round pick.

The problem is that Russel is a cap dump unless you retain at least half. Reilly is worth at least a mid pick. I guess the 3rd could be upgraded to a later 2nd but the 3rd will already be very early.

I understand what you are saying, I just respectfully disagree

The most I would do is Russel and Jp for Reilly, chlapik, and the Columbus 2nd.

Again can’t be 2020 picks since bonuses are paid at FA

Nope they got extended to November 1, when FA starts. Their bonuses are tied to the start of each year of a contract, not July 1

Damn, I’m happy I’m wrong. Have at the 2020 3rd then (the Dallas 2nd will be too much imo)
