Offersheet Domi

Description
Does this team make the playoffs?

The Rangers trade was just to get the pick back from that gawd awful Vesey trade which was needed for the Domi offersheet.

Dahlin and Jokiharju are probably gonna have to sign two year bridge deals till Okposo's contract expires, maybe just one will have to but time will tell.

Tried to send Miller and Montour to teams that could realistically use them and have cap space, I think that's fair value for those two and both Philly and Dallas need a RHD.

I think that 3rd line would be alright, hopefully Thompson takes a step, could give Cozens a look there but shouldn't rush him, Middlestadt starts in Rochester, he's first call up if there's injuries.

Tried to improve the top 6, get a 2C, keep the Girgs-Lars-Oks checking line together and improve the goaltending, yes the defense takes a hit but they had too many D anyway so someone has to go and Ristolainen trades are too controversial.. 😃, hopefully that 3rd pair would be serviceable, wanted a veteran but affordable 3rd pair.

Let me have it CapFriendly critics, all opinions welcome but let's try to keep it constructive, thanks!

LOL yeah I get that, here is something to consider. Would you give up 8th OVA for Mantha? Domi and Mantha have both been around for 5 years, their numbers are pretty close over the entirety of their careers. Domi is a .69 PPG player while Mantha is a .66 PPG player. Domi has a +4 differatial for his career Mantha is -12 Domi has played 375 games out of a possible 410 games. Mantha has played 260 games. Mantha has 84 goals 89 assists and 173 points over that span. Domi has 81 goals 170 Assists for 251 points. Domi has 184 take aways and 273 give aways over 5 years. Mantha has 125 take aways and 198 give aways. Mantha has a .76 give away % and a .48 Take away %. Domi has .49 take away % and a .73 give away %. As you can see the numbers over their careers are really close but some fans would have you believe that Mantha is worth a top 5 pick but Domi is not even worth a top 10 pick.

I think I would but I'd want either one of the Habs or Hawks 2nd round picks coming back with Domi.

I'm not a Sabres fan but I thought this might be a different take on the Domi to Buffalo idea and most are dead set against trading the 2020 1st, personally I'd consider trading that 8th overall pick but I'd have to know with 100% certainty that the guy I'm trading it for is signing a 7 or 8 year deal otherwise no way I'm dealing it.

I’d put Cozens in the lineup at 3C,
and not sign Granlund
Not a big fan of his, and we need that $$$ to go towards defense
Just can’t have that big of a potential hole with a 2021 1st on the line
If we miss the playoffs & that becomes a top3 pick... yikes

I do like the Domi idea,
but let’s make sure we get in the playoffs next year so we aren’t kicking ourselves about that pick

Thanks for commenting!

I do think Cozens should be eased in at 3C or 3RW with capable linemates but am hopeful that Thompson hits his stride and am very against rushing Cozens so I left him off this lineup.

I think Granlund will rebound if he gets out of Nashville but to each their own, I think he could be a great addition to the Sabres and really think they need a 2C and a top 6 winger so that's who I went with for this post, he does come with risk though.

The whole point of this was to make the playoffs and still have cap space for Dahlin/Jokiharju extensions/bridge deals so hopefully the 2021 pick isn't a top 3 pick.. Lol

Its tough to do anything with all the cap space Skinner and Okposo are taking up, hopefully the new Sabres GM has a good offseason.

Here is the thing though almost no one is going to sign longer than 3 or 4 years because of the flat cap. They will want to get their big payday once the cap starts to rise again. But let's just say for arguments sake he signs 8 years × 6 Mil as a sign and trade

Yeah I'd do that but the majority of Sabres fans wouldn't, I'm a believer in term and maximizing the return on that 1st round pick that was invested in acquiring that player, if Domi was only willing to sign a 5 year deal I'd pass.

So yeah these guys can wait for the cap to rise but a guy like Domi would be a ****in idiot to pass up $48M if someone offers it to him, some of these guys depending on their ages would be far better off to sign a secure deal now then taking their chances on the cap going up, a lot could happen in the next few years, a guy could get seriously injured or the market could change for what guys are getting at certain ages, obviously it's different for every player though.

Who's the UFA forward that's worth spending on?
Older guys like Hoffman or Dadonov? I don't think that's a good idea.
Those picks for the Domi offersheet are getting who that's any better? Nylander? Huberdeau? Not likely

I'm a Domi fan, think he'd be a good fit in Buffalo.

No I don't but waiting around and continuing to suck isn't good either, I tried to structure the contracts so there might be enough to sign Dahlin but there might not be enough, that Okposo contract is a problem but it isn't going away and really A LOT of young stars have been signing bridge deals so who's to say Dahlin wouldn't.

See your point. But IMO Domi is a good 50 point guy...other guys might be available. Sabres seemed to strapped themselves wih some bad contacts. Okposo and Skinner. yikes.
Unfortunately for the Sabres, they are in a division with Tampa, Boston and Toronto where teams are committed in win yearly (with various degrees of success). Ottawa and likely Detroit will have a running start on young talent over the Sabres. During the course of Eichel's contract, Sabres are gonna have tough time just to make the playoffs , never mind making noise in the playoffs.
