So we swap Montour for a worse defenceman on a worse contract? How does that make sense for us?

I'd move Montour for NAK and your 2020 1st if its in the high 20s range

@RoyalBlueSabres
@LindyRuffRider
@Skyraider112

Let's just compare a few stats
Gostisbehere had the highest ZS%, lowest +/-, lowest pts/min, among all Flyer defensemen.
Montour had the third highest ZS%, highest +/-, third best pts/min, among all Buffalo defensemen.
At this point Montour would most likely be the Flyers #1 RHD defenseman.
On the other hand Gostisbehere would be the Sabres #3 LHD defenseman.
In no way is this close to a one for one trade.
IMO the difference between a #1 RHD and #3 LHD is at least a 25th OA 1st round pick.
I may make this trade if that was the offer, but Montour for Gostisbehere is not even close to reality.

While that exchange is closer, IMO the Flyers would need to add for Miller. (Did I mention I am really excited about Montour, his offensive is really solid and his defensive is above average)
As a result of very fortunate events, Buffalo had too many RHD.
First Murray of the Ducks let Botterill have Montour for the bargain price of a late 1st and what Murray must have thought was the second coming of Paul Coffey, Brenden Guhle.
Then in early June of last year McPhee gifts Botterill with Miller for a late 2nd.
Later in June, Bowman (not to be confused with Scotty) gives Botterill the greatest gift of all, Jokiharju for Alex (not even a shadow of Willie or Michael) Nylander.
Henri is a natural and has the instincts of a much more mature defenseman. I wish the talented Dahlin had his instincts.
So both Miller and Montour were splitting what ever playing time was available as the 3rd RHD, sometimes playing out of position as a LHD, or giving Rasmus or Henri a rest.
While this arrangement was good because it deflated Montour's stats during a contract year, it also deflated Miller's value.
IMO, the Flyers would need to add to get Miller as well. I may be inflating Colin's value but 2021 second seems to be about the correct value to add.
But, I may be wrong, maybe Ghost will become an offensive force again and his defense will pick up and maybe Miller will be a dud.
In the end, I do not think there is a deal here.

Miller has not gained any value from the time of his trade. He was traded for a 2nd and 5th. I'd actually argue he has lost a hair of value. Asking for a 2nd to be added with Ghost implies that you value Ghost as either a cap dump or valueless, which isn't really the case here. I think a similarly priced defenseman on the side they need is a fair ask. Ghost can bounce back to a much larger ceiling than Miller could.
