Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Martinez, Alec
Additional Details:
WSH gets a slightly better d-man to round out their top 4 for next season. Ovechkin and Vrana need contracts after the 2020-21 season so Martinez is basically a rental, which also ends up freeing up cap space for Ovi and Vrana, which otherwise could potentially be a problem if Jensen’s cap hit was still on the books.
VGK
  1. Jensen, Nick
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
VGK gets a slightly worse, but similar defenseman with more more years left on his deal than Martinez, plus a 2nd round pick. Jensen valued at a 2nd round pick as well, so Vegas recoups a 2nd rounder they traded away to get Martinez and Jensen matches the other.
2.
WSH
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Pánik, Richard
Additional Details:
Panik seems to be much more useful when he can play further up the lineup. Played half the year on the 4th line for the caps and it just doesn’t make sense for him or the Capitals to continue mis-utilizing him.

IMO it would be cool to see Ovi take a small pay cut to finish out his career.

I know its insane, but maybe copy crosby and do 8 mil for however long.

Or 8,888,888

True that would be awesome, wouldn’t bet against Ovi doing that either, it’s obvious he wants to win another cup. Still need cap room for Vrana and Samsonov, and the cap isn’t going up, so trades will probably have to happen regardless.

I love Ovechkin and this might sound wrong but anything more than 7m for a 35 year old Ovechkin is going to be way too much. i would love for him to sign a 5m deal and let other people get paid. i guess we'll see how much of a leader he really is next year

7m for 40-50 goals is not to much.

If he asked for like a 6-8 year deal over 9.5m+ then it would be an issue

no doubt but a team willing to risk more probably doesn't have the team that could help Ovechkin get 40-50 goals

Pass on Martinez. Caps need their 2nd round picks and he really isn't that much of an upgrade over Jensen. In fact, I'll say Jensen has a better season than Martinez next year. Rinaldo is absolute garbage player. But I do like the addition of Green.

Ovechkin is definitely going to have to take a cut, especially with a non-expanding cap. One problem is that the majority of the team is $3M or less. Shifting then doesn't open much because you still need a decent enough guy to fill those spots. Meaning, you move Panik's $2.75M you still need a decent player in that slot, so you maybe save $1M cap? That's nothing major.

Oshie picked the right your to score 33 goals. His contract is probably the worst on the team. if the Caps can figure out a way to get Seattle to take him that is their best option.

Backstrom is my favorite Cap but that contract kills. A $2.5M raise. He will be 33 when that new contract season starts, and it runs 5 years. They kept his cap % the same, that is where that amount came from, 11.29% of the cap at time of signing.

Ovechkin will actually be 36 when the season starts under his new contract (Sept birthday). He needs to decide if he want's high $ or term, because a high $ with tern should not be on the table.

Fair enough, I do think that they are similar players, but I think Martinez is a bit more of a complete player (two-way abilities). Another important reason for his acquisition would be that his contract is up after the 20-21 season, where we need cap space, although we could always trade Jensen then.

I added Rinaldo as a 14th forward purely because of his grit and aggression; just to throw him in there if we were looking for even more physicality.

And Green coming back to WSH for a couple years would definitely be awesome, just as a bottom pairing D and PP specialist.

I don't see OVI playing anywhere other than Washington, love the 8,888,888 x 8 contract
