No reason to give either that much. Joki isnt egregious, maybe 4-5 instead. Dahlin should be around 7

We are jumping the gun way too soon on the Dahlin's 10 million cap. Also, I love Jokiharju, before he became a Sabres, I had him in all but 1 of my dynasty hockey leagues. He is not worth 6 million dollars right now.

The $10 mil is based on what they gave Jack. At the time he was not worth that much but you knew he was going to be soon so to get a long-term deal done you have to take the leap of faith that the player will continue to develop.

Agreed on both Joker should be a bridge deal 3 or 4 x about 3.5 - 4 or long term 8 x 5. Dahlin 8 x 8.25 - 8.5 roughly. He will surpass Ekblad and Chabot but not 10 unless we wait until after this year and he ends up with 70 + points and a Norris trophy finalist

I think you guys are underestimating what he'll make. He was the 1st overall pick and has met expectations. Scored 44 points in his rookie year and improved to a 55 point pace this year and he's not a liability in his own zone, either. If he takes another step, he'll be one of the best Dmen in the league at the age of 21. That'll cost big money. Take Ekblad for example, the last #1 overall Dman. His ELC years weren't as impressive as Dahlin's have been so far and he signed for 7.5 when the cap was lower than it is now, and the league has shifted in the way money gets doled out since then; star RFA's are making more. On an 8 year deal for Dahlin, I'd expect between 9 and 11.

you pay to buy cost certainty for 8 years.

if we wait until after the season to sign him, he will be the highest paid defensemen in the league on an 8 year deal.

lets hope he takes the eichel route and not the matthews/marner/werenski/meier etc route.

Last year he was most definitely a liability in his own end right now. He was benched several times for his play in the defensive zone.

Yep both those dcontracts seem right and here is why

Dahlins point totals will make a (9-10 mill contract happen as in his first year he got 44 points in 82 games. This year in 59 games he had 40 points. If he played out the full season he was on pace for 55-60 points. Now lets say 2020-2021 he achieves a 50+ point season yeah 9-10mill contract for 8 years. Cause if we learned anything from Subban, bridge deals on defense man can end up being costly.

If we go by comparables in 2 seasons before their contracts

Chabot before he got his 8million contract had 25 points followed by 55 points a year later. But remember they got him to sign early and while he had 39 points this season there was the chance he may have gotten 60 which would have made his asking price higher.
      E. Larsson had 44 points followed by 40 points. However he played 2 full seasons while Dahlin this year only played 59 games but had 40 points.
Subban in his prime before his contract had 53 points followed by 60 points.

As for Joki maybe reduce the money or increase the term if u plan to pay that much

So either 3.5-4mill for 3-4 years or if u want 5-6mill than 5-6 years.

I disagree, when he was asked to take a more defensive approach he took a step back. He's still got a lot to learn. He's still supremely talented but unless he has hardware in his cabinet he is not a 10 million dollar dman, only the 3rd behind Doughty and Karlsson. He is not at the level they were at when they signed those

Sign him for 4 years then sign him to an 8 year extension. That maximizes the amount of UFA years you can buy out

or, he chooses arbitration and becomes a UFA and we screwed our selves.

or, he continues to progress and we pay 14 million a year in 4 years.

cap will be in a different place by then, at least their will be league stability. not many people are going to afford 14 million dollar cap hits any way, not something Id concern myself with

the doughty and karlsson contracts are exactly what happens when you overpay late in a career vs early in a career. if dahlin says he is willing to sign for 8 years to give us all of his 20s, i sign up almost without asking what the price is.

Both Karlsson and Doughty both just signed their deals. If were learning anything from this its we should dump them for as many assets as possible before they turn 28

i would be thrilled with those aav's for 8 year deals. maybe you dont do it with jokiharju and do a 3 year deal, but if you can lock up dahlin for 8 years, you do it.

i believe that should be there goal as bridge deals for young players can end up costing a team more in some cases. Subban was a prime example. Montreal could have locked him for 6 years at 7 mill but they chose to give him a 2 year bridge which made his asking price go much higher and ended up giving him a 9mill 8 year deal. Dahlin is young and Buffalo should lock him up for the max term. Joki is slightly more expendable so 3-5 years should be good enough as by then some prospects could come take his place or they move him to get someone they need.

Dahlin will be 21 next year and Buffalo needs him in their rebuild. Spending money to keep him as long as possible is a good solution and while 10mill is alot if he can acheive 40+ point seasons and help buffalo get to the playoffs i think it would be okay.

Last year he was most definitely a liability in his own end right now. He was benched several times for his play in the defensive zone.

He didn't have a great showing in his own end this year, but it definitely could've been worse and his rookie year was quite impressive in that regard. Over the course of his short career so far, he's been perfectly average in the Dzone (albeit in a sheltered role), which is more than you can normally expect for teenage Dmen.

Jerry Seinfeld - big or little - doesn't go down for anyone, anywhere, at anytime! Now I'd appreciate it if you please leave.
