Revisiting Ehlers

Created by: zyyyp
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2020
Published: Jul. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Proposed an Ehlers trade a little while back, was told it might be a slight overpayment but I think that's what it takes sometimes to acquire a star player. I wanted to look at a potential future roster with Ehlers in the fold + some 2020 draftee's etc. Obviously just fooling around and having some fun here but I think this would be a team that's more than ready to compete, let me know what you think.

Pens could have interest in him, but that would be to high a price. That's two of their top three prospects and a first, they can't afford it.

Despite that big of a package, i really think it would have to depend who is available at 10 and if the Jets really want that player, in relation to where they will eventually be picking. just my opinion

Now that is more of a package that would get us Ehlers while not hurting ourselves to much. I like it.

Palmieri has lost a lot in value since he's now a rental. Even in a sign and trade that's to much (especially since there's no salary coming back to us).

We're very unlikely to find a suitor for Wood and Butcher unless we take equal or more salary back.

I can only see Ehlers moving next off season as the jets will move Laine if they can't some to an agreement(BTW, I am not saying that he won't but that there is a possibility) as they can't get rid of both.

Joseph, Legare, 1st for Palmieri

Hard no from the Pens. Not even two of those three pieces.

And thats not even considering cap implications.

Why spend so much on Smith to play 4th line minutes?

to be honest I completely forgot that they traded Addison, my thinking initially was that they would still keep their best F and D prospects (Poulin and Addison) but yeah I can see why they wouldn't want to do Joseph now.

I wanted a skilled veteran that can carry most of the line to help out Amirov coming up, I could've made that the 3rd line but then Bratt and Boqvist would've been on the 4th which to me wasn't really an option.

really? an extended Palmieri is worth a 1st and an A prospect in my view easily, Pens would get him here giving up a late 1st and still keeping their best prospect in Poulin (I forgot they traded Addison when I was making it so I figured losing Joseph wouldn't hurt them as bad)

yeah that's fair, Jets have been wanting a nice 2C for a while and Lundell would likely be available in that spot. strong two-way C with top 6 potential and probably one of the more NHL ready prospects in the draft.

Interesting, I believe NJ checked in on Laine last offseason and the ask was too much so my thinking here was to try and work out a deal for Ehlers if we couldn't get Laine. If Laine is ever made available NJ should be all over that as well

how so? Dillon is a nice shutdown guy, Smith is a great prospect, Bahl can be a good physical shutdown guy and chip in some offence, Subban sucks yeah, and then the bottom pairing could be shaky but the same could be said formats 3rd pairings in the league.

Smith is really good, no issue there. Dillon is the kind of player that won't gradually decline, it will be a steep drop off as he ages IMO.

Bahl will be interesting to follow, because for big D there's really no in between, they are either able to handle the speed of the pro game or they can't and they bust hard.

I would honestly keep Severson, RHD are really tough to acquire as we see every day with all the TOR posts. IMO he's a guy you build around. NJ would be able to get a player of Ehlers quality at 7th overall.

While he might drop off, he'd still be better than most of our defenceman and he's only on a 3 year deal there.

You are definetly right on Bahl, I guess I'm just optimistic with him he's actually a decent skater and has some good puck skills. If he doesn't pan out I feel pretty good about Daniil Misyul, maybe he'd be in that spot. We are also pretty likely to get a high end defenceman in the 2021 draft that I didn't account for here, strong year for D men and we probably won't be a playoff team.

I do like Severson but this team lacks high end wingers so badly, getting an elite player at 7 on top of a guy like Ehlers would be absolutely massive for our offensive group. Putting an established guy like that on Hughes' wing would also be really good for his development, any draft pick from this year we'll have to wait at least a year or two on.

Really like these trades zyyyp. Team looks good. The guy above mentioned losing Severson would hurt since RHD are hard to come by. But honestly, curious what you think about drafting Braden Schneider?

I absolutely love the kid, and i think he fits in perfectly to our lineup eventually. Solid trades and solid roster/D core. Ehlers with Holtz would be really nice. Call me crazy, but each day I think I like Jack Quinn more and more over Holtz for some reason.

thanks buddy, I always enjoy talking some Devils hockey! Schneider I would be okay with, I really like some aspects of his game (physicality, clearing the net, joins the rush at the right time) but to me he's just not a good enough skater to have a huge impact in the NHL. He really struggles moving laterally / pivoting etc. and I think it will hold him back, I'm guessing he will end up as a Radko Gudas type of guy. I would prefer Guhle over him personally, even more physical, far better skater, more creative offensively, better gap control, etc. If I was the Devils though I would either be taking all forwards in the 1st round, or trading back / trading a roster player to pick up some 2nds and 3rds. Plenty of defenceman in that range worth taking a chance on (O'Rourke, Kuznetsov, Niemela, Andrae, Jurmo, Viro, Thompson, Villeneueve, the list goes on). A lot of those guys have similar if not better upside than Guhle, Sanderson, Schneider and you can get them a lot later on.

I can understand your thinking on Quinn, I used to feel similar and I still really like him but Holtz is a cut above. Holtz production in the SHL was super impressive, the only 2 players that had a better goal scoring rate than him as a draft eligible were Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund... pretty good company! I just can't imagine Quinn having that big of an impact if he played in the same league. Holtz can also mix it up physically if necessary, which is something NJ could seriously use. I will say though if the Devils don't get Holtz at 7 I would be going Quinn with the AZ pick 100%.

Pens can’t afford to resign him, so you’ll only get a rental price. 2021 protected 1st and any prospect not named Poulin/Legare/POJ is the best they would do. Not totally certain about Hallander. Could also add a bottom 6 piece like Rodrigues’ rights depending on trade timing

Ah okay, in that case they'd probably look at offers from other teams.
