20-21 Realistic Roster

Created by: FLPensFan
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2020
Published: Jul. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trades are going to be tough with only a half dozen teams really being able to take on salary. Penguins would like to trade Bjugstad, but, nobody is going to acquire him for just picks or prospect. Cheaper to buyout his one remaining year. Would be 600K cap hit this year, and 1.75M cap hit in 21-22 season. Jack Johnson, as much as we'd love to see him bought out, with 3 years remaining, thats a 1.5-1.9M cap hit for 3 years, and another 3 years of around 900K...too expensive. Ease POJ into the lineup, rotating him in and out with JJ.

Murray needs to be moved, because he will cost too much to resign. 3rd pairing RD is a position of need. Jokiharju would be a cheap get, and Buffalo needs a goalie. If they don't want Murray or don't want to move Jokiharju, find another team (there's 5-8 of them) that need a goalie and can give up a young 3rd pairing D-man with upside.

Jarry, McCann, and Simon...I've given cheaper, shorter term deals to deal with the financial issues, but, the 23 man roster below has plenty of room to increase salary to these 3.

Poulin is NHL ready. He was a top 3 player in the Q this year. Start him on 3rd line, and if he excels, he can swap with Simon and move up with Crosby.

considering Joki hasn't done anything in the NHL yet and Murray already has two stanley cups, this is what a fair trade would look like.

Ive said it before and ill say it again. Pens will not trade a 2X Stanley Cup goalie who had a rough season for crappy value. If we were sitting here a year ago today discussing Murrays trade value... #1- he wouldn't be moved cause Pens had no interest at the time and #2. he would've fetched a top young player like Joki+. He will not be sold for pennies on the dollar.

you mean like when they handed MAF to Vegas?

I dont care what the penguins would do. Buffalo doesn't make the trade. Why are we giving up a stud 20 year old defensemen and the 38th overall pick for the right to pay matt murray 6 million dollars a year?

no thank you, keep him or send him elsewhere.

Yeah, except it isn’t one bad season. He’s had 2 pretty bad seasons in three years. The middle of the 3 was good, but a .899 and .907 in the past 3 years isn’t something anyone would give up a young good player like Joki for. Murray’s a fine goalie, Jarry is better. And that’s fine, you guys keep him. Didn’t see a Sabres fan making this trade req..

Jarry definitely isn't better than Murray but I am all for trading Jarry this offseason while his value is at an all time high. This was a guy who I was pissed pens didnt waive at the beginning of the season because I thought DeSmith was better. If pens can get an asset out of Jarry I am all for it and I think he will be the goalie traded this offseason.

That’s fine, I think everyone sees Murray as what he is.. a good goalie when he’s on and a decent back up when not. Problem is he’s been a starter for 4 years and 2 of those have been bad, 2 have been good. TBH I wouldn’t deal Joki straight up for Murray, let alone adding a second. The description says 3rd pairing Dman.. usually 3rd pairings aren’t in the NHL at 19, and holding down a top 4 spot at 20 on a team that was top 10 in 5v5 GA.

Bjugstad can get moved pretty easily for a late round pick, he’s far from a buyout candidate. Murray doesn’t get you Jokiharju, but the 2nd is a good starting point. Probably a B prospect with it or a 3rd pair RD like Borgen

Who in their right mind wants to pay 4.1M for Nick Bjugstad, who has missed 73 games over the last 3 seasons, and is coming off major back surgery. Before this latest injury and the pandemic, maybe someone would give a 3rd or 4th for him. Now, I don't see any team taking a chance on a high AAV 3C coming off major injuries. Not worth it.

Well, at least we agree on his value if he’s healthy. A lot of teams around the league have cap space to burn and could take a flyer on him at that price. Ottawa, Detroit, Minnesota could all use a depth 2RW/3C and the caliber of player making 3+ for that role has gone down substantially since he earned the contract. I think he could he moved for a 4th round pick or later to a team not pleased with the UFA crop that sees his potential. Worst case, his cap is gone at the end of the year. Best case, he finds a fit and gets an extension or is moved at the deadline for a pick upgrade (in the value you mentioned). I don’t see him as that hard to move when “unmovable” players like Gudbranson/Galchenyuk got swapped without issue. Especially when Gudbranson had the additional problem of term on his deal.

For those Buffalo posters not wanting to give up Jokiharju, you have to give to get. Buffalo has ZERO goaltending. It's not like Ulmark is some unbelievable stud, and UPL isn't ready. You may have also glossed over the fact that I said right in the Team Explanation that if Buffalo wouldn't move Jokiharju or didn't want Murray, you move on to the other 5-8 teams that need goaltending.

The fact is, Buffalo needs goaltending, and a 2-time cup winning goalie isn't going to go for peanuts. Pittsburgh's biggest need for next season is bottom pair defensemen. I wouldn't mind getting Jake McCabe from Buffalo for Murray, but there would have to be more coming from Buffalo, like a high pick or high prospect.

For those Penguins fans who would rather see Jarry go over Murray...it's strictly a cost issue at this point. If the Penguins want to keep Murray at what it will cost to keep him, they are going to have to trade away others the team needs to keep. Hornqvist would likely be 1st they would need to move to afford Murray.

I'd also respond that, Jarry's trade value may be at it's highest, but, I think you may be overvaluing what he could get in return. A 2nd or 3rd round pick, or maybe a B-level prospect is about all you get for Jarry, and even that may be high. He had a good season last year, but he had his rough spots, and he's still never played an NHL playoff game.
