Ok I know that at first glance, it seems like the Canucks are giving up too much. But think of it this way, 11 million cap space for 2 YEARS for the Canucks. You could sign Quinn Hughes and Elias Petterson to bridge deals with that money. Erne and the 5th probably won't become anything, but the red wings have to give something. Meanwhile, the red wings get to the cap minimum (Yzerman said he wasn't going to sign any big name free agents, so he has to get to the cap floor) and get a top prospect (Podkolzin), a first (assuming the Canucks get into the playoffs), a 2nd rounder, and baertschi that who could potentially play well and could be flipped for picks at trade deadline. It may seem like an overpay for the Canucks, but in negotiations, the Red Wings have leverage as they don't really need to make a trade like this. The Canucks need to make a trade like this if they want to keep Hughes and Petterson.

We could pay a first next year to get rid of Loui. Sven's contract expires in one more year and we don't need to sign Petey and Quinn until then anyway. So it's basically Podkolzin and a second for one year off of Roussel.

I understand where your coming from and Detroits side of this but it would never happen.

damn the Canucks are giving up most of their future here. I thought Benning was doing a good job contending for a playoff spot plus getting good picks, put this puts that down the drain. I see Detroit accepting this, but it might be a tad too much for Van. Podkolzin plus a first and second? Detroit as a rebuilder loves this but I don’t think the Canucks are willing to give this much up. Van declines

I think what we should be looking at is who do we have to move this off season, who next off season and who of that can go to Seattle for the right price.

Sutter - This year
Roussel - One or the other (Sea unlikely)
Myers - I wish but probably can't (NMC)
Eriksson - Next year (Sea more likely)
Baertchi - This year
Beagle - Maybe next year (Sea unlikely)

This is half optimistic half realistic.

Like your effort but no need to give up nearly this much. Others above have stated why.

They don't have to do this to keep Petterson and Hughes. The maple leafs got out of zadorov and all it cost was Connor Brown. That being said, taking off podkolzin would make this more fair.
