I hope the Kings will shoot for Hjarmarsson first, if not, I wouldn't mind having a Staal(Marc) in a Kings Jersey. If all else including FA fails then yes, we'll take Russell for a 6th.

But why would you guys need a guy like Staal/Hjalmarsson/Russell? Ps I only did the KR trade here because I've heard LA fans saying they'd be interested in a veteran d-man

I thought the goal for you was to give NHL minutes to Clague and Bjornfot...

We have one experienced defenseman and that is Doughty. He can't mentor 5/6 rookies. Plus having a defensive defenseman to Doughtys left would help him rebound significantly. Doughty hasn't had a solid defensively reliable D partner since Scuderi/Regehr. He plays best when he isnt the one having to do all the defense.

Which is why I prefer many more players before Staal/Russell.

Hmm interesting, then don't throw Staal with him lol he'll have to do the D job anyway Staal is a pylon he can't skate. Like if you want your team to win you DON'T put him on the ice lol... same goes for Ceci and Boychuk

Bjornfot may play another year in the AHL and Clague/MacDermid will likely swap for the 6th D spot.

I said which is why I would prefer many more players than two of them. I would take Staal only because he'd be a perfect mentor, but I would not play him with Doughty.

The Kings don't want just any veteran defenseman. They want a solid defensive defenseman that can play big minutes on the first pairing next to Drew Doughty. Prior leadership and championship experience are both bonuses. Someone that used to be a top-paring defensemen in decline would be best.

Two years remaining on their deal would be ideal, as the Kings need someone to satisfy the exposure requirements for the expansion draft in 2021. They need to expose at least one defenseman that played 40+ games in 2020-21 or 70+ games in 2019-20 and 2020-21 combined. Kurtis MacDermid is currently on track to satisfy that requirement if he plays 25+ games next season, but if he goes down with a season-ending injury, then the Kings will have to expose a NHL defenseman that they would have otherwise protected (I.e. Roy or Walker).

Russell checks the veteran box, but none of the others, as he was never a 1st pairing defenseman, has never held a leadership role, never won a Cup, and only has one year remaining on his contract. He's not really capable of playing top pairing minutes either.

Kings pass.

If Ryan Miller finally retires, Anaheim has Anthony Stolarz as the probable backup to John Gibson and two excellent European youngsters (Dostal and Durny) in the wings, so Skinner is a non-entity for us.

To take on Neal's contract, which runs for three more years (unlike the Backes contract), we'd need a lot more than a 2021 one-round upgrade into the third and an RFA third-pairing defenseman whose qualifying offer is $2 million. We traded a real player for Backes, a first-round pick and a good RD prospect, so think in terms of Max jones for Neal (with $1.5 or $2 million retention), your 2021 first, and Raphael Lavoie. I know that seems like a very high price, but I repeat that Neal's contract runs for three more seasons (incl 2020-2021).
