Description
Not going to go crazy and get a Pietrangelo (it won't happen), but taking a look at some possibilities.

I considered Chris Tanev, but I feel like he will end up staying in Vancouver, and his injury history is too concerning to give a long contract like he might want.
T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic are both likely UFAs off of Calgary, so they could use a Dman in Dermott in the trade, but Brodie's results have been sub-par away from Giordano, and personally I've never been too high on Hamonic (although I know the Leafs did try to trade for him and Brodie before in different trades). Ultimately, acquiring either of them would've forced a trade for Kerfoot as well, and for now I kept trades to a minimum.

Gudas has consistently driven play in his career, although primarily on the 3rd pair. Giving him top 4 minutes is a risk that he may not be up to the task, but a 2-year deal doesn't carry much long-term risk, and he can PK and provide physicality and a veteran presence that may help on the right side of the ice.

If people think I traded Johnsson or Dermott for too much in return, or to the wrong teams, they are both just cap dump trades ultimately, but they should both fetch at least a 2nd so I went for teams who could use a scoring forward and a young defenseman.

No from Calgary not moving our 2nd for another LD. Yes i know he is capable of playing the right side but not at the top 4 level we are looking for

I think that there are too many teams weak at RD for Gudas to get less than $3 million for 3 years.

With a flat cap Gudas is too much of risk.
And trading Dermott is non starter for me.

Both Gudas and Jensen were really bad this year.

I am actually in favour of keeping Johnsson and trading Kerfoot but only if we can get another 3rd line C.

I also would like to keep Dermott and see if he can move into the top 4 as a RD, and am bigger on Johnsson than Kerfoot. For this theoretical one though, I'm going with no new 3C emerging, so Johnsson out, and the idea was to get a RD so Dermott out made it work better.

Fair enough, I think he should get at least a 2nd; he's a 23 year old Dman who can play 2nd pair LD (we don't know about top-4 RD yet, but even if not), but if that's too much some other team would likely bite on it in a cap world if he's going for under 2M.

Flames already have Gio, Hanifin, and Valimaki who would be better suited for the top 2 LD spots and then Kylington who is about the same

When we consider that only 5 teams finished 2019-2020 with over 5M in cap space, and nobody had planned for a flat cap (projections in February were for 84M as the lowest, with 88.4M as the highest for 2020-2021 per Bob McKenzie, the UFAs like Gudas are going to get squeezed. I don't doubt thta historically a team would give him at least 3x3, but he's coming off a down year, and teams are cap strapped. Taking a short contract where his physical presence will be hyped immensely by media, and maybe racking up some additional points on a high-flying offensive team, I could see him biting on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Fair enough, in my head i just went, Brodie/Hamonic walking, Valimaki coming up, but Gio is also late 30s, they could use young Dmen. I personally was an advocate for acquiring Rasmus Andersson since about his AHL debut, but that ship has clearly sailed. With Kylington too, maybe that's not a fit, but then there's always a team looking for Defense.
