Weaponizing cap space

Created by: dca919
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 10, 2020
Published: Jul. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Stevie uses his cap space to acquire assets for the continued rebuilding. Tries to go after UFA d-man and strikes out. Misses out on goalies he targeted and pivots to taking on Lundqvist for a pick.

Near the trade deadline, Stevie moves Stepan, Filppula, Helm, and Glendening by retaining 50% of their salaries and brings up the prospects. He finds a taker (Colorado) for Lundqvist at 50% but gets a low draft pick at best. Nemeth will get moved at the deadline unless he re-signs with the Wings by that time.

Bernier will be re-signed to a 2 year deal during the season.
Wings get better backup goalie (Lundqvist vs Howard), better 2nd line center (Stepan vs Filppula), They still are a bottom 3 team and enter the 2021 Draft Lottery.

He signs a 1 day contract to retire a Wing after having his LTIR contract traded to the Leafs....did you not follow that?

The Leafs need LTIR relief. Yzerman wants assets for the rebuild. What good is Z being on the team in an IR capacity when the Wings don't need the cap space? For public relations? Because of COVID, I doubt he comes back to the US from Sweden--so move the contract further the rebuild with assets. The Leafs LTIR contracts of Horton and Clarkson expired. They are actively seeking LTIR.

If Yzerman can move on from faces of a franchise like Martin St. Louis and buyout Lecavalier: he can trade Z's corpse of a contract.

Then ARI loses out on Hall, overpays on his rental, and gave away picks for nothing. Not to mention making the Kessel trade look worse. And further torments the fan base of the team after being gifted a COVID playoff spot.

Then the Rangers don't have the cap room to re-sign all of Alexandar Georgiev, Brendan Lemieux, Tony DeAngelo, Ryan Strome, and Jesper Fast (UFA). So they will lose out on a very good player and be forced to choose between Shesterkin and Georgiev even sooner.

The Wings should get it and Toronto should give it. There.

LTIR contract space is an asset. Unlike 35+ contracts that are a liability. With LTIR Toronto can go over the cap and keep more of their current team for 1 more run at the Cup.

HUH? Do you not understand how cap space works?

How was Toronto able to have a PROJECTED CAP HIT of $95,178,332 million last year and still play in the league with a cap of 81.5M? The LTIR credits of Horton, Clarkson, Johnsson, and Mikheyev added up to 14.875M. You acquire the player to go over the salary cap. Look at Toronto's team page. Then look at Arizona's with Hossa's LTIR. Both teams got to have more salary than the cap allowed. That is an asset. That will cost a team a draft pick to acquire.

let’s use a hypothetical player with a 6.083 million dollar cap hit. The NHL salary cap stays flat at $81.5 million, and the hypothetical player goes onto LTIR at the start of the season-which he will like he did last year, the team would then be able to spend up to 6.083 million more to replace him because they know that the player will never return. Oh and this little rule of being able to exceed the salary cap by 10% in the off-season to be able to acquire the contract....

So LTIR does do a little thing --like allow a team to temporarily exceed the cap. Can't think of any reason why Toronto's GM would be actively seeking that---can you?

If you acquire a 6M contract you added a 6M contract and then you put it on LTIR you get rid of that 6M so your cap stays at the same spot. By adding that contract you don't get 6M more cap space.

Leafs were able to fit under cap because 13 million of that 95M cap roll was Horton and Clarkson who were going on LTIR. They didn't have 95M cap roll without them

Im not wrong lmfao. I know those LTIRs work. They are not allowing you to spend more above cap. They added Clarkson because it allowed them to wait for Marner if necessary. If Marner was signed earlier, they wouldnt add Clarkson and be alright even without Clarksons LTIR. Its that simple. It doesnt allow you to spend more, it allows you to be more flexible with time if you do it correctly but thats it. You add 6M to your cap roll and you give it away on LTIR so its like not having that contract at all.

I regret to inform you that adding LTIR contracts is not helping to grow cap room in no way, shape or form. Teams still like to add it since it brings other external assets like picks into organization. Leafs like doing that. Using their financial abilities to gain more picks/assets. Its that simple.. experts from TSN.. platform they are using should not dictate their intelligence or hockey knowledge.

1- resigning Fast to play top 6 minutes blocks Kravstov and Kakko's development so I'm all for letting him go. Also I wouldn't be shocked if Strome gets moved, that's what I want at least.

Also NO, FOR THE 1 MILLIONTH TIME, we won't have to choose between Shesterkin and Geoergiev for the ED since Igor's exempt

No, your understanding of the cap is not correct. RE-READ the article and think. Is Z's contract an asset that will cost Toronto a draft pick. Is it a nothing thing, then why would the Leafs want it? or TSN do a story about it? Or will it cost Detroit a draft pick to get rid of since it is a liability to get rid of (in which case Detroit with plenty of cap space would just sit on it) like you think.

What is so hard about this. I even gave you an article showing the exact example of what I am talking about how the Leafs want LTIR contracts so they can EXCEED THE SALARY CAP.

EXACT example. And you are still arguing. Go tweet Frank Seravalli and tell him he doesn't understand what he is talking about and see how well it goes. I am saying the exact same thing as him. He's right and so am I.

Example #2. The Leafs currently have $4,591,467 in cap room next year having spent 76.908M (true statement). They have 16 under contract (true statement). They sign 6 players at league minimum 750k (which is 4.5M total). Now they have 22 players under contract at 81.409M and 91.467k left in cap space. However the offseason rules allow the team to exceed the cap by 10%. That means 81.5+ (81.5*10%)= 89.65M to spend. The Leafs use this offseason cap to acquire Zetterberg's contract (6.083M) bringing their total cap dollars to 87.492M and having 23 players on the roster. The Leafs put Z on LTIR and now gain 5.992M =(87.492-81.5M) to spend on that 23rd player replacement....thereby allowing them to go over the salary cap by 5.992M.

Could the Leafs spend 5.992M on that 23rd player with only 91.467k left in salary cap without Z's LTIR contract. NO, they would be over the regular season cap. Acquiring the LTIR contract allowed the Leafs to spend 5.992M more than other teams without the LTIR contract.

Therefore the LTIR contract is an asset that will cost the Leafs something. Just like Frank Seravalli and I believe.

LTIR IS NOT FREE CAP SPACE

Clearing you don't know how LTIRs work. Leafs didn't get more cap space because Horton and Clarkson were on the books.
Lundqvist isn't moving for that vague promise.
Just to add to the Leafs inflated LTIR total. Also included was LTIR stints of Reilly, Muzzin, Marner and Tavares. Now if you want your best players to go on LTIR and be replaced by Marincin, Sandin, Liljegren, and Brooks, just to save cap space....so be it.

The problem is not the players, it's the offer.

LTIR IS NOT FREE CAP SPACE

Therefore the LTIR contract is free cap space. In the case above 5.992M in cap space. They had 91.467 left. After the LTIR exemption they have 5.992M to spend.

That's free cap space (acquired with free cap space of 10% overage on the off-season and LTIR overage on the regular season---FREE CAP SPACE). Why is this pulling teeth?

Concrete example. Which is why the Leafs want LTIR contracts. Hence they are an asset to the team selling them.

The problem is not the players, it's the offer.

Offer is steep because so many teams are in such cap trouble with a flat cap and RFA have arbitration rights that will hamstring clubs until right before training camp.

How many teams have cap space to add significant salaries? Ottawa, Detroit, Montreal, Buffalo, Colorado---but not really since they have to worry about Makar and Landeskog next year followed by Byram the following year. Kings and their prospects similar time frames along with 35+ contracts to contend with. So 4 buyers and a double-digit sellers that will have to either let NHL talent walk for nothing, buyout players, or sell--all of which means a whole in a team that asks a lot of a prospect. Those moves get GM's fired. GM's selling draft picks to stay competitive don't catch up for 4-5 years.
