Cap and asset management -- 2021

Description
STEPS FROM 2020 OFFSEASON (see other ACGM):
1) Come to terms on reasonable contract extensions with both Markstrom and Toffoli, but wait to make the signings official until after some cap can be cleared.
2) Use Demko plus picks to trade away Eriksson's contract. Once Markstrom is extended Demko becomes a luxury that could easily be lost to expansion in a year. Better to use his value to shed cap now.
3) Use Stecher and a pick to trade one of Beagle or Roussel's contracts. Stecher could use a fresh start and may be too expensive for VAN to use as a 3rd pairing guy if Travis Green doesn't want to use him in the top 4.
4) Use Virtanen to move one of Beagle or Roussels' contracts. I like JV and think he can still be a solid 2RW, but if this move helps shed a bad contract and brings back a Dman or the cap space to sign a Dman then I think it's worth it. I took the basic idea for this trade from a Shibbal18 ACGM.
5) Sign remaining RFA's and team UFA's before free agency opens.
6) Use extra cap space to sign Tanev (or another veteran Dman if he demands more term) to a 1 year deal. If the Virtanen trade just opens up cap space I like the idea of signing DeMelo as a FA instead of Montour as an RFA. This roster allows for at least one top 4-quality Dman to spend time on the 3rd pair to potentially mentor any of the young callups from Utica. There's still room to pay for 2019/20 performance bonuses with lots of cap space opening up for 2021.

STEPS IN 2021 OFFSEASON:
1) Extend Petey and Hughes, either for 8 years or bridge deals that retain their RFA rights at expiry.
2) Expansion protection list:
Forwards; Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, Miller, Gaudette, Toffoli, Lind
Defencemen; Montour, Juolevi, Rafferty
Goalie; Markstrom
Seattle considers selecting Myers but they don't like his contract. Instead they take MacEwen as a younger depth forward option.
2) Re-sign Edler on a 1 year discounted deal. As long as he's still effective and wants to play he and the team can take the Lidstrom/Chara approach and just go year-to-year.
3) Fill out remaining roster spots with cheaper UFA signings or promotions from the farm. I'm showing a fair bit of prospect promotion on this roster, but most of these spots will likely go to veteran depth signings. Hopefully the higher talent prospects will be able to contribute in at least small roles and force their way onto the roster.

All of those cap dump trades were in the 2020 offseason. There will be no offer sheet for Petey; whether it's a bridge or long-term deal VAN will have him locked up before that can happen.

Petey might get more on an 8 year deal. Hughes will definitely get way more
also Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo just don't take your cap dumps and some other team OS pettersson and/or Hughes

See my answer above; the cap dump trades are made in the 2020 offseason. If they cost more in higher picks or prospects so be it. VAN won’t let other teams have the opportunity to offer sheet either of their young stars. They’ll both be extended (bridge or long-term) before that happens.

VAN decline. They are not moving Virtanen.

I just don't get why detroit would take that bad contract for a goalie right now. we already have nielson and abby that we want to get rid of. There is going to be a lot of movement the next two years with flat cap and expansion draft, I'll take my chances getting a goalie then without the bad contract.
