Description
Did some agm for teams that will miss the tournament this season. Today the New Jersey Devils. The Devils though last offseason they could accelerate their rebuild by trading for Subban and by getting Hughes N.1 overall at the draft but they still finished 26th and both players disapointed last season. Subban had the worst season since becoming a full time nhler and Hughes only produced 32 pts as a rookie and I think he got the worst start for a 1st overall draft since Yakupov.

Now they have two players in the top 10 at this year draft. With the 7th overall I think they'll pick Holtz. New Jersey are weak at this position and they need a goal scorer. Holtz checks those two boxes. The only interesting player at the position is Palmieri and he has one year remaining before hitting free agency. Then with the 10th overall pick (if it stays that way) I think they should pick Lundell. He could becomes the next Zajac for them (good two-way player and center the 3rd line. Another option they could do is try to get Anaheim pick (6th overall) by trading the Arizona (10th) and Vancouver (17th) picks. They'll have to add more, and it will depend how those two play in the tournament, but they could look at that option in order to pick Raymond 6th overall if he's still available.

Next up the free agency. As I told before they need a goal scorer and they have ample of capspace and don't have a player that should command a big pay day. Plus as I previously said Palmieri will need a new contract the season after as well as Zajac and Gusev and in two year Subban and Schneider big contract will come off their books. So they'll have the money to sign someone even if in two years Hughes and Smith will also need new contracts. Hoffman would be my first choice since he fill a needs and New Jersey as the money to paid him. If not I would try to sign Craig Smith. He's not flashy but hets the job done and could play the big brother role for a young team as New Jersey.

I also think Ty Smith and Boqvist will graduate as full time nhlers next season.

Actually from just a points perspective Yakupov's rookie season was a lot better than Hughes was.

I've check just for fun and I had to look until 1997 to find a worst season for a 1st overall and it was Joe Thornton (7pts in 55 games). Of course it doesn't count goalie (Fleury and DiPietro).

Agreed here. If anything, the Devils should consider trading back the Ari or Van pick if the right player isn’t there or there is a cluster of equally tiered players. With no second or third rd picks, and just a so/so prospect pool, we need all the picks we can get!
