Boeser Trade - Few Teams With Cap Room

Created by: AJC13
Team: 2019-20 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2020
Published: Jul. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I believe this is the sort of trade VAN would look to make if they were to trade Boeser. NJD probably doesn't want to trade draft picks, but they could offer several prospects that are still on their ELC to cure VAN's cap woes.

Ngl that return seems a bit underwhelming for Boeser, even if you add Eriksson as a cap dump in it.

I believe NJD has other prospects to offer as well or in addition to those listed. Some NJD fans might be more on top of that than me. Trade helps VAN because they could resign Toffoli to replace Boeser and have enough cap room to resign Markstrom, Tanev, Stecher, and add 4-5 good prospects currently on their ELC.

Imo Nucks's prospect pool is good as it is already. They don't really need a load of them more.

What they'd need is a short-term replacement for Boeser if they decide to trade him away.

How about this

New Jersey Devils
Brock Boeser
Loui Eriksson

Vancouver Canucks
Nikita Gusev
Michael McLeod
Nate Schnarr
Conditional 2021 1st round pick (TOP 10 protected, turns to 2022 1st rounder if conditions are not met)

There's no need for a 1st if Eriksson is in the deal. And we're already very unlikely to make the postseason in 2021 so if we trade a first it'll be at least top 15 protected.

If Eriksson weren't involved there wouldn't be condition at all. Boeser for a pending UFA and two mid-to-low prospects would be absolutely horrible deal for VAN as it is.

Honestly I think you're better off keeping Boeser and paying teams to take Eriksson, Baertschi and Sutter. The return for Boeser would be wildly underwhelming because GM's know you need to cap space. Included with that is the fact that to resign Pettersson and Hughes you will need to get rid of 1 of the listed guys anyway, so you would lose the return for Boeser and then some.

Don't believe VAN has the cap room for Gusev. I have a feeling Markstrom is going to demand a very high salary and VAN has to pay it. Maybe Bratt instead of Gusev, but I believe VAN would rather resign
Toffoli and have 4-5 ELC's.

If VAN doesn't make a trade like this, the other option is trading next years 1st round pick for a team to take Eriksson like TOR did with CAR and Marleau. But with the cap not increasing it will probably take more than a 1st round pick for one of the few teams with cap space and that are also not in a "total" rebuild, to take on Eriksson's contract for the next 2!!! years.

What has Eriksson to do with the condition?

I've never proposed such a deal, I've only said that it's either Eriksson or a first.

With Eriksson having two seasons left on his contract after this season and the salary cap not increasing for maybe the next 3 years, VAN might have to include much more in the trade than a 1st round pick.

I'm referring to the trade proposal of justaBoss which has a first going from New Jersey to Vancouver not from Vancouver to New Jersey. But I definitely agree with your statement.

No thanks. Gusev will give you roughly similar production, Devils would be looking to improve their offence without giving up a key asset. Vancouver wouldn't be able to afford him at the end of next year anyway. 2021 draft is loaded with high end defenceman and NJ is likely to miss the playoffs again, even if that pick is between 10-20 they could land a great young defenceman that they desperately need. I would rather center a deal around Severson and one of their 1st this year (not 7th).
