Description
Personal takes:

I know Lindy is by far not the preferred headcoach of many many Devils fans but I’m willing to give him a chance. The thing we need right now is improvement from our young core. If Lindy can help Nico, Jack, both Jesper’s and Ty Smith to reach their next level he’s already done a good job imo. Put it differently: As long as we don’t see improvements from these players we’ll stay where we are, and we’ll remain one of the worst teams in the entire league. There’s no coach in this world who can change that.
It can’t be taken for granted but I can see this 2021/2022 team being a bubble team already. By then players like Hischier, Hughes, Bratt, Boqvist, Kuokkanen, Walsh, Smith and Blackwood are the young core of the franchise and have somewhat taken over the team. UFA signings are mostly short term deals so the cap isn’t damaged by the time all those ELC’s run out and to make sure there are enough roster spots for our prospects to play and develop. With all those 1st round picks the farm system has gotten a ton of true impact talent and should emerge as one of the very best. This ACGM is obviously relying on a lot of our prospects to develop.

19/20 season:

- Decisions made regarding conditional draft picks that affect the Devils: Devils get a 2020 3rd round pick from CAR (Sami Vatanen) / Devils get a 2021 5th from BUF (Wayne Simmonds) / Devils receive a 2021 unconditional 1st instead of a 2020 1st from VAN because they missed the postseason (Blake Coleman via TBL) / ARI doesn't win the lottery in 2020 so the Devils get their 2020 1st round selection (Taylor Hall).
- ELC slides (now last until 2023): Ty Smith / Kevin Bahl / Nikita Okhotyuk / Nolan Foote
- Montreal wins the phase 2 lottery and will select 1 OA in the 2020 NHL entry draft.

20/21 season:

- The Devils don't name a captain for the 20/21 season but name a leadership group of 5 assistant captains (Zajac, Palmieri, Hischier, Severson, Subban).
- 2020 NHL entry draft: #1 Alexis Lafreniere (MTL) / #2 Quinton Byfield (LAK) / #3 Tim Stützle (OTT) / #4 Lucas Raymond (DET) / #5 Marco Rossi (OTT) / #6 Jamie Drysdale (ANA) / #7 Alexander Holtz (NJD) / #8 Cole Perfetti (BUF) / #9 Jake Sanderson (CHI) / #10 Anton Lundell (NJD)
- The Devils sign both Alexander Holtz and Anton Lundell to ELC’s and let them stay in Europe for 20/21. The Devils also sign Reilly Walsh to his ELC.
- UFA signings in 2020: Brendan Dillon (2 years at 4.75 mil) / Craig Smith (3 years at 4.75 mil) / Luca Sbisa (1 year at 750k)
- Devils sign following players to contract extensions in the 2020 offseason: Jesper Bratt (3 years at 3.25 mil) / Joey Anderson (2 years at 925k) / Nick Merkley (2 years at 925k) / Brett Seney (2 years at 875k) / Dakota Mermis (2 years at 800k) / Colton White (2 years at 800k) / Josh Jacobs (1 year at 700k) / Ben Street (2 years at 750k) / Mackenzie Blackwood (4 years at 3.8 mil)
- Devils sign following player to a contract extension during the 20/21 season: Kyle Palmieri (5 years at 6.5 mil)
- ELC slides (last until 2024): Alexander Holtz / Anton Lundell / Nikita Okhotyuk (due to a injury riddled season in 19/20 the Devils decide to send him back to the OHL as an overager for 20/21)
- Seattle ??? expansion draft: Devils protect 7/3/1
F: Hischier / Bratt / Kuokkanen / Palmieri / Zacha / Anderson / Smith
D: Butcher / Dillon / Severson
G: Blackwood
Seattle selects Miles Wood (on LTIR therefore)

21/22 season:

- The Devils name Nico Hischier as their new captain. His fulltime assistants will be Zajac and Subban.
- 2021 Devils draftees: #2 RHD Brandt Clarke (NJD) / #15 G Jesper Wallstedt (VAN) / #24 LHD Daniil Chayka (DAL) / #52 LHD Jimi Suomi (NYI)
- Following Prospects sign their ELC (in brackets where they'll play): Graeme Clarke (AHL) / Aarne Talvitie (AHL) / Tyce Thompson (AHL) / Eetu Päkilä (AHL) / Brandt Clarke (Juniors) / Akira Schmid (AHL) / Michael Vukojevic (AHL) / Daniil Chayka (Juniors) / Alexander Holtz (Devils send him back to Sweden for his D+2 season) / Anton Lundell (Devils send him back to Finland for his D+2 season)
- Devils sign following players out of UFA in 2021: Travis Zajac (1 year at 2.75 mil) / Alexander Steen (1 year at 2.75 mil) / Chad Ruhwedel (1 year at 750k) / Colton Sceviour (1 year at 750k) / Carter Hutton (1 year at 750k) / Jonas Brodin (5 years at 6 mil)
- Devils sign following players to contract extensions in the 2021 offseason: Janne Kuokkanen (2 years at 1.25 mil) / Gilles Senn (2 years at 925k) / Nathan Bastian (2 years at 825k) / Yegor Sharangovich (2 years at 825k) / David Quenneville (1 year at 800k) / Henrik Borgström (2 years at 1.25 mil)
- Devils buyout following player in the 2021 offseason: Corey Schneider (results in a 2 mil caphit for the 21/22 and the 22/23 season)
- Devils Top Prospects at the start of the 21/22 season: #1 Brandt Clarke / #2 Alexander Holtz / #3 Anton Lundell / #4 Jesper Wallstedt / #5 Nolan Foote / #6 Daniil Chayka / #7 Kevin Bahl / #8 Jimi Suomi / #9 Tyce Thompson / #10 Aarne Talvitie / #11 Arseni Gritsyuk / #12 Nikola Pasic / #13 Patrick Moynihan / #14 Nikita Okhotyuk / #15 Daniil Misyul / #16 Graeme Clarke / #17 Akira Schmid / #18 Nate Schnarr / #19 Eetu Pakkila / #20 Yegor Sharangovich

I'm aware that both Dillon and Smith are overpayed. That's just to make sure they sign with us rather than with a contender.

Thanks for the reminder regarding Blackwood, I forgot to take that into consideration.

I like most of the moves, Holtz will definitely be ready for the NHL in his D+2 though.

Our other draft choice from 2020 should be on the roster in 4/5 years unless they turn out to be a huge bust. (would prefer Quinn or Amirov over Lundell)

Can't see Chayka being available at 24 but holy hell if we got Clarke our blue line would be stacked with Smith, Bahl etc. already there.

You won't have to pay Dillon that much, Palmieri is overpaid as well.

I would keep Gusev unless we're getting a 1st and an A+ prospect.

Honestly, as long as both sign I'm willing to overpay.

Gusev is traded if he hasn't signed an extension by the trade deadline. No doubt.

Same can be said for Palmieri. I would offer Goose 6x6 and if he's not interested in re-signing, we could do better in a trade than a 1st and a 2nd especially if we're retaining 50%.

A first and an A+ for Gusev is not accurate. He is not worth that

I feel like any free agent we sign this year (especially players like Dillon, Tanev, Bruan, those 30year+ players) will come pretty cheap. I don't think other teams that are cap strapped will want to pay for a lot of these aging vets in FA. we have such an advantage this offseason with our cap space AND with the cap being flat the next 2 years, i think most teams are gonna focus on being cap compliant and not overspend in years past.

Best thing Shero ever did before being fired was still having us have all this cap space.

              Sure, same treatment for Palmieri.

How many 1st's have teams payed for rentals as of lately? You're probably a bit to optistic in that regard.

In a sign and trade: Yes, he might be.

As a pure rental: likely not

As long as the term is not overwhelming I'm willing to overpay. But yeah, I definitely agree with you.

how do you figure that? he's the most skilled player on the roster by a fair margin and was on pace for 55 points despite it being his first year in NA, getting screwed by coaching staff, plenty of roster / management changes throughout the season etc. I expect him to be a 70 point player next year quite easily, if it's a sign and trade he is definitely worth a 1st and an A+ prospect. Even if it wasn't he's worth a 1st and a good prospect. Look at what Coleman and Pageau fetched...

why does it have to be a rental? at 28 years of age I'm sure plenty of teams would be interested in locking him up.

Being the most skilled on the NJ Devils is like being the sharpest knife in the spoon drawer.

not really, plenty of talent on that team. I guess a Sabres fan wouldn't really know what that looks like.

Because Gusev is a rental, it's just a fact.
