I don't know what he would cost, but what is the purpose of him? The Leafs have tons of bottom-3 D.

He just signed an extension so I don’t think they’ll trade him.

I believe he wants Toronto to pick him a cheap D coming out of college / AHL & have him turn into a top 4 option like Marino of PIT. If that’s the case, I heard Dylan Coghlan seems likely to head in that direction.

Im not a VGK fan but I would guess value-wise it would probably take Bracco + a mid-late pick. Seems like a good trade target for the Leafs though, could be a good cost controlled 3rd pair guy for them if he pans out. It would be interesting to see if VGK would be willing to move one of their only right handed D men though (they actually may have a top 6 D core who all shoot left next season)

he has a very cheap contract and would likely be cheap to acquire. its very low risk but could benefit them if the Leafs have trouble with their cap space over the next couple seasons

I think that the Leafs' should be concentrating on getting Sandin and Liljegren proper veteran, defensively responsible mentor D-partners so that they might turn into top-4 Ds rather than throwing more inexperienced D into the mix.

I dont think his value is super high. Mid round pick probably.

I could see Vegas actually moving him, Schuldt or Bischoff this off season just because I believe all 3 have to clear waivers now to be sent to AHL. I don’t think Whitecloud or Schuldt would clear before being taken by another team, Maybe Bischoff would, But they may not want to take the chance.

Sure, but I still don't get the purpose. The Leafs' have Muzzin and Rielly. Then they have Dermott 157 games experience, Holl 81 games experience, Sandin 28 games experience, Rosen 20 games experience, Liljegren 11 games experience and Lehtonen 0 games experience. They need D who know their way around the league and can mentor young D.

It’s always a risk taking these college / AHL guys cuz they might not pan out, but the benefit is that if they succeed, you get them on an ELC for a few years. I would like Toronto to clear cap to sign DeMelo, think he is what they need. However, the Leafs may feel confident with Dermott’s progress & give him a top 4 role.

Whitecloud isnt going to be carrying the Leafs D core. They could make another move to add a vet D if they wanted to, but this is a decent move just to have someone cheap to fall back on if needed. For the next 2 seasons TOR would get a very cheap contract who could fill in on the 3rd pair or as a 7th D if needed. Its an AHL move that could benefit their NHL team if he pans out - whats not to like?

Leafs and Vegas in similiar boats, and large needs for elc contributors, so Vegas would need a elc back, so not really getting ahead either way

I am not going to freak out if the Leafs' trade for Whitecloud, but it just seems completely pointless to me. The Leafs have real issues that need to be addressed. Whitecloud would address none of them and would be throwing ever more young D on to the pile for the already clogged up pipeline of young D who are not being properly developed because the Leafs have no vets to play them with.

You're new to CapFriendly. For some reason, it seems that any other teams (NHL or AHL) RHD are so much better than any of the Leafs Dmen except Muzzin and Reilly on this site. Get used to seeing RHD trades....95% of which the Leafs will overpay for any right handed shooting Dman.

Oh I don't doubt it. And if Keefe is going to be as hungup on LHD-RHD splits as Babcock was then they might as well get Whitecloud, and start trading away players like Sandin and Dermott. But, I see little evidence that is the case. If you want to move Dermott to the top-4 (either by moving him to the right, or moving Rielly to the right) then you still have Lehtonen, Sandin, Rosen, Marincin, Liljegren and Kivihalme all competing for third pairing spots. They have too many bodies, not too few. That only gets worse if they manage to acquire a top pairing RHD and a physical veteran D to play on the third pairing.

The Marlies were so overflowing with D this season that even carrying more D than most AHL teams carry they still had to send RHD ELCs like Hollowell and Duszak to the ECHL for half the season. Duszak had 18 points in 23 games in the AHL as a D. No room so half the season in the ECHL. Hollowell is better than Duszak. No room so half the season in the ECHL.

The most common statement about him across every VGK media member is he almost never makes a mistake. He doesn't make big or flashy plays but he is really smart with the puck. I think with the most recent Bracco news I would say Whitecloud would be a good return for him since VGK need scoring in their pipeline.
