At last the "but the Wild can't sign him" narrative can die.

I wouldn't burn the year. It's not worth it.

If hes willing to sign a deal, wait till the offseason. He is the Wild’s future superstar

But if you don’t burn a year, would Kaprisov still sign. He’s already being underpaid for what he produces for one year, why would he allow it to be 2?

because everyone has to play by the same rules and he'll make more in the NHL than the KHL.

It absolutely is. Lemme explain..

If they don't get him signed now, he'll likely stay in Russia another year given the KHL is more likely to start on time. You've now lost him for the 20/21 season. Signing him for the 21/22 season he'll now be old enough that you're only getting him for a 1 year ELC so you're only getting a 1 year ELC anyhow. This move guarantees the Wild will have him here in 20/21 whenever that season begins.

Burning a year of his ELC with no game sucks, but shoutout to Billy G for finally getting him over. The Wild need a superstar. Now imagine if they win the lotto and get Laf.

Russia is ravaged with the chinese designed germ weapon as well, And the KHL is more likely to go broke than the NHL.
He was coming to the NHL either way. It's where the money is.

That would be a disaster. Not just for the Wild, but for the NHL in general. If star KHL players can't break through on a regular basis, we'll be seeing less and less of them trying to come over.

I was thinking the same thing at first.

There might be some merit to burning a year needlessly. If he takes a bit to adjust to the NHL the Wild could get him to sign a cheaper 2nd contract next year. 1 year ELC, 2 year bridge deal, then the stupid high (Marner) payday he'll demand if he is everything Wild fans have been hoping for. Or the 1 year ELC and lock him up for term with a reasonable AAV rather then the 2 year ELC where he looks like a $10m player.

He's a superstar in Russia, on a powerhouse team that can afford to pay him more than he'll make on his ELC is the NHL. Just getting him to MN was a win for the Wild. He re-signed in the KHL last time because he didn't feel wanted by the Wild, as a Wild fan I'd prefer not to have history repeat itself.

Besides it's really not much different than burning a year of an ELC by a college grad FA signing by playing them 5 mins in a game 81 or 82 of the season.

He wouldn't sign this year unless he got to burn that year.

I've seen rumors/speculation both ways about this.
