You're still overrating Puljujarvi, since when is he "one of the best NHL-ready players in the world." He by and large has not worked out in Edmonton and he's entering bust territory. If he won't sign for next year with Edmonton, they absolutely should be in a rush to trade him while he still has value.
Holding onto Larsson for next year when the team is a ways from contending and Bouchard is in the pipeline is incredibly poor asset management but ok. Fine on not wanting JJ (I understand that point). But on its face, Larsson as a rental is worth significantly less than Jarry under team control, and I don't think Puljujarvi is worth that much more than Lafferty (difference of a second round pick plus vs. a fourth round pick plus). JJ was in the deal to make it cap neutral
Whatever bud. You seem to be completely missing the fact that the Oilers have a young core and are in the process of building a perennial contender, while the Penguins have a rapidly aging core and are trying to win as many cups as possible before that core fails. The price to hang on, is greater than the price to build, it always is. You see, Edmonton doesn't need Lafferty, Jarry, and absolutely do not need Johnson. If they want to stay on track they do need Larsson.
The Oilers are far better off hanging onto Larsson and allowing Bouchard to develop in a sheltered role. If he forces his way onto the roster then he can start the season playing a sheltered role on the bottom pair and getting time on the second PP. That will allow him time to improve his defensive game and build confidence. By the time the season concludes, he may be quite ready for top-4 and 1st PP time. That would be perfect, and allow Tippett to put together a playoff team with fantastic defensive depth. The potential of Edmonton's top six forwards is much greater than it was at the beginning of this past season. Add a young, skilled defense that includes Klefbom, Larsson, Nurse, Bear, Jones, Bouchard, and possibly Benning, and the team may be closer to contention than you think. After the 2021 playoffs Larsson can walk if he wants, and Edmonton will have two young top 4 RD to compliment Klefbom and Nurse, and Jones. What's more, at the very least Samorukov and Broberg, and quite possibly Kesselring, and Kemp will all be pushing for NHL spots with in the following 2-3 years. That, my friend, is responsible asset management.
We can argue back and forth about Puljujarvi, but I can think of no other 22-year-old hockey player outside the NHL who has already proven to be a NHL 3RW and shown flashes of becoming much more. He has been one of the best NHL-ready players in the world
not currently playing in the NHL, and he has been so since signing with Karpat. That is why he was also the most heavily scouted player in the Liiga, and perhaps why you have him lined up on Crosby's right side. I doesn't matter whether you agree that acquiring your 1RW is worth the price of your backup goaltender and a 2nd round pick. In the end, what matters is that a trade makes sense for both teams. What you proposed does not make sense for Edmonton because it is a move that takes the team off of its current plan, sets it back at least one season, and may expose a developing prospect unnecessarily. You don't believe that what I proposed makes sense for Pittsburgh, evidently because you feel it is too high a price to pay to get the players you identified in order to compete for another cup. That's fair. Time to move on.
