Edmonton Next Year

Description
I don't know EDM's line ups very well and I may have missed something blatantly obvious. I understand that EDM wouldn't want to give up their first. But it may make sense under these circumstances.
This is just my take on their team.
(Luke Schenn was just a filler. Could be any low paid dman)

Sabres would make that trade. We can use Koskinen as 1B until our prospects are ready and we can put Russell as our 7th d for the year until his contract expires. We can send you back a 4th for that deal and it is worth it for 1st round pick as we will have the cap space this year

Overpayment to Athanasiou, he didn't preform up to standards this season 3m 1 more year. If he doesn't accept EDM gets compensation unless they match an offer sheet.

Overpay for AA, underpay on Bear.

Holland isn't going to give up a 1st to get rid of Koskinen. He was very good this year for them. Multiple different people have pointed out that the Russell contract can very easily be moved to a lower budget team. Hes only owed like $1.5M or $2M more, but with a cap hit of $4M can help bring a team up above the cap floor.

When you pool them both together, you're adding $8.5M in cap to one team. OF course thats going to cost more. Oilers aren't trading Koskinen, and if they were, they aren't pooling him with another high cap player. The proposal just doesn't make any sense at all.

I can guarantee you Miller isn't moving to Edmonton for $1M. Hes not worth anymore than that and as a goalie who made over $60M in career earnings, and family is living in Cali, that signing makes 0 sense.

I mean the oilers are willing to use a first to get rid of neal but probably not russell and koski. Russell is only owed 1.5 mil for next season and if the oilers retain that 1.5 mil in a trade, a team basically takes him in for no money and a 2.5 mil cap hit. Koski contract at first had me scared but now it's pretty alright for a 1a/b and it's just for 2 more years

It is not realistic to suggest Edmonton trading its 2020 1st round pick in order to dump salary, but since Capfriendly is not the real world...

If you want to chase Edmonton's 2020 1st round pick then the conversation has to start with James Neal headed to Detroit. Edmonton will need something in return, at least Detroit's 3rd but preferably Washington's second round pick.

If Holland had Lehner signed, then he would probably move Koskinen. Yzerman would have to pay to acquire him though; I'd guess one of Detroit's better forward prospects, or at minimum a third round pick.

Even in the make-believe world it is difficult to imagine Kris Russell waiving his M-NTC in order to go to the Wings, but if he goes anywhere, the preference is a mid-ranking forward prospect or at least a 4th round pick in return.

The cap space created by moving Neal, Koskinen, and Russell without bringing back additional NHL contracts amounts to $14,250,000, which when added to the $9,000,000 or so that Holland currently has to work with should provide plenty of space to sign Lehner, offer Bear a long-term contract, chase a high-end UFA like Mike Hoffman or Evgeni Dadonov, bring back Tyler Ennis and Riley Sheahan on 1-year deals, and still have room to extend RHN and re-sign Yamamoto next summer. This is particularly true with Larsson's contract expiring and the possibility that he will be surpassed, or at least replaced by a younger, less expensive player. Benoit Pouliot's $1,333,333 cap hit comes off the books then as well.

I'd rather keep koskinen, not sign lehner and keep the first. trade russell and a third/fourth for a low pick instead.

I'm pretty sure Holland said he won't be trading that pick.

Lehner was barely better than Koskinen this year, trading their 1st and Koskinen with zero return and then signing Lehner to a massive contract is crazy on all fronts.
