Backlund has a full NTC for another season and a young family. He's not likely to waive, especially after being here through the entire rebuild and now with a competitive team.

Besides, the Flames need to go after another top 6 C to add to Monahan and Backlund, in my opinion. Bennett crashed as a C and Jankowski didn't fair any better. That's left the Flames with less than ideal C depth if they want to compete for a Cup.

Tampa would probably match at that AAV - even if they couldnt keep him it would be worth it to match and trade him elsewhere for more than that OS compensation

OS is worth a try...If offer sheet came in, Tampa would definitely try to pay another team to unload either Gourde or Johnson or Killorn just to keep Cirelli, but would need to deal with all those NTC’s. They have so many high dollar players with NTCs, they are kind of hosed right now. Very poor contract management on the part of the Lightning.

That deal is very easily matched by Tampa. Offer sheets rarely ever happen, and to have even a chance at success, you'd need to drastically overpay for a player. Signing him to a below market value deal, in a city with much higher state/provincial tax isn't exactly the type of the deal that would convince a player of his caliber to even entertain
